I have a few things for you to think about.

Your mother survived, that's great.

You are predisposed, that's terrible.

You know you are predisposed, that knowledge is invaluable.

You will watch for signs, you will have more frequent checkups.

You will drive the medical community to drinking with all the questions and "what if's".

If you do get cancer, breast or otherwise, you will almost certainly catch it early.

If your mother is truly a survivor, 5 years or so cancer free, think of the technology that cured her. The Dr's that work on her were using beads and rattles, and chanting songs.

Do you think your Dr. will be working with that technology?

It is great you are concerned. The trick, as I see it, is be concerned but not worried. Do all the self tests, do them at least as often as recommended. Get the blood tests and the X-rays and the Mammograms and all that stuff. If you do that, and you will because you are CONCERNED, then my money is on you. You may still get it but it will be correctable. A bit of discomfort, OK a lot of discomfort, but you will pull through fine and live a long and fruitful life.

How did I do? I hope I cheered you up but mostly I want you to do a reality check and don't let something that might be control your life to the extent that you don't have a life. Especially since you have a family history of survival, all the tools you need to head things off early, and an ever increasing technological pool to draw from for cures.

I am sorry, but there is some evidence that certain breast cancer can be inherited. Are you sure you inherited the genes that are making women more prone to develop the disease?
In any case that means that you have a higher risk in comparison with women without familiar breast cancer.

Furthermore nobody can tell you if you will develop or not a tumor, if you want to contribute to decrease your risk, please do not smoke, get a healthy diet containing fibers and vitamins, avoid excessive overweight, if possible try to exercise regularly and ask your gynecologist to teach you how to check your breast periodically.
You do have all the chances to prevent the development of an inherited disease that is not 100% transmissible. In the worst of the cases, discovering a tumor on time gives you a huge advantage over women that are walking in life without thinking about the subject till is too late.
If the only cancer that your mother-aunt-grandma-developed is a breast cancer, there is no special reason to fear others.
Knowing that your mother could go through her cancer is the best reason to keep up your courage and believe that if also happens to you, then there will be better treatments available to face a disease that is not a synonym of death anymore.
We all have potentially a cancer, moreover while aging. Keeping your life in the best possible equilibrium, trying to enjoy from the beautiful little things will give you the best natural medicine that exists: love to yourself and to the people surrounding you. A strong inmune system, probably one of the clues for being healthier.
Trust me, You will be fine.

I have the same medical history, and I can tell you what the doctors have told me. You must start having yearly mammograms when you are 10 YEARS YOUNGER than your mother's age when she was diagnosed. So if she was 35 when she was diagnosed, you must have yearly mammograms beginning when you are age 25. Since you have a family history, your health insurance will pay for this. In addition, exercise regularly, eat well, keep your weight normal and stable. You can do monthly breast exams if you wish, but my doctor doesn't say it's an absolute necessity if you are having mammograms once a year because you most likely won't even be able to feel any lump that could grow between mammograms. Some lumps are so deep in the breast tissue that you couldn't feel it no matter how hard you tried. Discuss all of this with your doctor. The best, most reliable way to cure cancer is to catch it early! You will have to ask your doctor, but I have never heard that a family history of breast cancer makes you more vulnerable to other cancers.

There is also a test you can have done by your dr. that tells you if you carry the gene for cancer.

From WebMD:
A breast cancer (BRCA) gene test is a blood test to check for specific changes (mutations) in genes that help control normal cell growth. Finding changes in these genes, called BRCA1 and BRCA2, can help determine your chance of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. A BRCA gene test does not test for cancer itself. This test is only done for people with a strong family history of breast cancer and sometimes for those who already have the disease. http://www.webmd.com/hw/breast_cancer/tu6462.asp
