What's special about NZ besides it's natural beauty?

Besides the Natural beauty? The atmosphere for one. In Auckland its what you expect from a city, yet in the small towns its relaxed and easy going...no hurry or traffic. People, NZ is now a very multicultural and diverse society. And yet retains its own unique traditions and culture. Adrenalin. NZ has a multitude of adventure and extremes sports options. Bungy jumping, heliskiing, jet boating. Take a family trip and relax. There are luxury resorts or backpackers. Hunting and Fishing if you prefer.
If you like wines, NZ has many vineyards accross the country. Great food in a multitude of cultural styles. Winter sports and great skiifields. Eco tourism is widespread, go whalewatching, swim with the dolphins or seals and many others.
I am biast though in that I think Kaikoura is the place to go.

I was in NZ in November and December 2005 and it was wonderful. I've travelled a lot (Carribean, Mexico,South America, Europe, China, Hawaii) and I think NZ's my favorite place.
We in the US have all the things that you find in NZ...beautiful snowcapped mountains, great beaches, geysers, native people, great sports, fun cities, museums, concerts, etc., but they're all scattered around the country and hard to get to in one trip. But in NZ it's possible to see them in a short period of time because the country is so compact. The train transportation is probably the most scenic in the world, and the roads are excellent.
When I arrived, I'd been having problems with my back, and everyone in Kaikoura was wonderful, and I got help from a wonderful massage therapist who fit me into her schedule the next day and completely solved my problem for a very reasonable fee.
Strangely, I broke a front tooth while I was staying in Dunedin, and the dentist took me in the next day, a Saturday (I've never heard of a dentist in the US who works on Sat.) and repaired the tooth perfectly, for about 1/3 of what it would cost at home.
Which brings up another thing...in NZ your dollars go much father, so restaurants, car rentals, hotels and hostels are cheap by US standards. Oh, and speaking of hostels, NZ hostels are some of the nicest, cleanest ones I've ever stayed at. One of my favorite nights was lounging in the hot tub on the roof of my hostel in Auckland while the city lights came on and the stars appeared. Magic
Walking at night is NOT dangerous, which is a pleasant change from where I live. People are friendly and always helpful. In other words, I'd move to NZ in a heartbeat if I could, because I left a part of mine there.

soooo many things...its stunningly beautiful and CLEAN. the lakes are unpolluted, the major crime rate is low (petty theft like car stereos is rampant in any country), pistols are near impossible to come by, so you're unlikely to be shot at, the police aren't a pack of wankers like in alot of countrys, the healthcare is cheap cheap cheap, its a great place to raise kids, you can go to the mountains and the ocean on the same day, the goverment actually LIKES the people who live here, and give us a pretty fair go at things, unless you're in the main centres, houses are pretty well priced. The people are really nice, outspoken, but nice. Theres no snakes, or predatory animals, so the outdoors is worry free ( theres 2 poisonous spiders apparently, in my 30 yrs living here ive never seen either) Theres loads of beautiful places to holiday close by, either withing NZ or within a few hours flight (aussie, fiji, rarotonga etc), the national Rugby team is the best in the world...i could rave all day. I was born here buthave travelled extensively worldwide, and i'd never live anywhere else, my partners american, and hes trying to convince his whole family to relocate here. Every country has good and bad points, nowhere is perfect, but NZ (in my opinion) is pretty damn close!.

Really don't go there if you don't have an interest in natural beauty ........ or friendly, helpful people who show an interest in YOU and in making your visit a good one. You can visit CITIES around the world but nothing comes near NZ for a great relaxed and entertaining atmosphere even in the smallest of towns...... ummmm, you could get lucky there too ! :)
