Spina bifida is a birth defect that results from a failure of the vertebrae to entirely close around the spinal cord. There is no known cause of it, but there is evidence that points to the interaction between genetic and environmental factors, and/or a lack of folic acid during fetal development. Spina bifida has 3 forms. Spina occulta is the most mild, because there is no protrusion of the spinal cord out through the back. There could be a tuft of hair in that area, but most people with spina bifida occulta don't even know they have it until their body starts to age, around 30.

Spina bifida cystica (meningocele) is the rarest, which is when the outer covering of the spinal cord (called the meninges) protrudes through the back as a sac or cyst. Because the spinal cord and nerves do not protrude, disability usually doesn't result.

Spina bifida cystica (myelomeningocele) causes the most damage because the meninges AND spinal cord protrude. Surgery is done to push the cyst back into the body shortly after birth, but since the spinal cord is involved, paralysis below the cyst usually results.

There is no "cure" other than surgery, and the best method of prevention is for women of childbearing age (or who are trying to get pregnant) to take Folic Acid, because the neural tube closes around the 2nd week (past the time when most women even find out they are pregnant).
