First, talk to your doctor. If he/she can't find anything else wrong with your back, and can only prescribe medication to control the pain, you might want to consider seeing a chiropractor.
Chiropractic is founded in the belief that the Central Nervous System controls every bodily function. When the spinal column is misaligned (chiropractic calls this a subluxation), it can pinch the nerves that run out between the vertebrae, causing pain, numbness/tingling, or any type of general malfunction in that nerve's corresponding body part. Disk degeneration is usually the result of years of pressure (via gravity and poor vertebral alignment) on the disks, leading to wear and tear of the disk.
Chiropractic aims to restore a more natural spine position, remove the pressure off of the nerves and disks, and restore proper function of the nervous system. I'm NOT saying that this is a definite cure for you, but if you are in a lot of pain it might be something to think about.
If you do decide to see a chiropractor, it would be in your best interest to ask family and friends for recommendations, visit a few different offices, explain your situation and ultimately pick the DC that you are most comfortable with.
No matter what you decide to do, I wish you the best of luck!

I also have degenerative disk disease. I also found out about 6 mos ago from back specialist.
My pain is different than yours. I have 4 thoracic and 2 lumbar bad. I have trouble sitting comfortably, especially on stools. I need to recline somewhat. And this is bad for me because I drive a truck for a living.
Have not felt fire, yet. What I get are muscle spasms. Feels like someone poking a finger in me. Also, I get pain from standing or walking for more than a few minutes. This is relieved by sitting.
My doctor allows me to use Tylenol3(codiene) and musle relaxers when needed. I also use OTC glucoimine and chondroitin from walmart. Its like greasing the disks a little.it helps a little.
I suggest you see a back specialist for advise. They may advise a pain specialist.(good drugs, there)
Chiropractic gives some help. And you'll love this, get an occassional massage.
You can expect this to worsen, without reversal. You can slow it, but not stop it.
Good luck with your relief.

Well, there is a solution, even if not yet scientifically renowned:
Go for a manual one-time treatment called Atlasprofilax. The effect on the self-healing power of the body is simply amazing. Your spine is set straight for the first time in your life and the pressure on the discs is distributed much better so they can recover within some weeks or months.
And it's really worth travelling far - at present, the treatment is available in California and Europe only, costing around 200 Dollars. Good luck!

Everyone has differnt signs and symptoms. There really is no such thing as normal. You should contact your rheumatologist and find out what can be done to relieve some of your pain.
You can also use webmd.com and look up degenerative disc disease.
