My brother chose "grey" as the wall colour for my brand new home. The walls of house have now been painted, and they look very white. There isn't much contrast between the walls, and the ceiling/moulding. What can I do in terms of decor to offset the whiteness. Repainting the entire house is out of the question.

What I did in my rooms was to paint "focus walls" to provide contrast. I did a vibrant green in my living room, gold with wallpaper dragging in my bedroom, etc.

They look white because the grey is so light. Put white against it and you should be able to see some color. If this is the case use a print with a white background for window treatments. This will bring the wall colour out.
If not then treat it as if it were white. Either paint only one wall in each room a richer colour or add lots of colour with furniture, throw pillows, throws over the backs of furniture etc.
You might also get a brilliant white colour and do the trim and ceiling with it to bring some contrast that way.

You could paint an accent wall- Choose a color that will really pop against the white/grey ath you have now. When you do an accent wall, you can really go beyond your normal range of wall colors- something really bright like a red, or orange. Or something deep like a chocolate brown, or deep burgandy. Take a look at your furniture and maybe pick out one of the accent colors that appear in your furnishings already. Don't be afraid of a dark or bright color- it's only paint- you can paint over it if you don't like it.

Another idea may be to install crown moulding. Paint it in a bright, crisp white. That may help to give you the contrast you wanted between the gray on the walls and the white on the ceiling

You might try painting, with an accent color to your furniture and furnishings, behind and over the couch/bed in a rectangle just larger than your couch/bed/dining table to make the room pop with color. You could add a shelf with a pic on it or over it ,over the couch. You may even use a second color to make a border around the rec. In the entrance or bdrm or bath use a metallic silver and make a large stripe or several thin ones around the mirrow or large pic and use a matching color to fill in between with. In the dining or living room you may want to paint an accent wall where your buffet or fireplace is to bring attention to these special items. If you are using say Burgundy and the silver metallic paints you might put sq. of Burgundy and border with the silver where you will place pic. down the hall or up a staircase to make the pics really stand out and to bring the rooms together with the colors and geometrical shapes or just put it behind a large pic or special wall decor. Paint is so easy and cheap and you can use it to decorate with and not have to use too many decorations that go out of style fast. Have fun and tell your bro to ask before painting someone else's home!!!!

you should paint your room a neutral color such as light grey, off white or maybe a light brown just in case you change your mind about the theme or color of the room later on that way the color on the walls is more likely to go with any other theme you chose without having to repaint the walls every time you turn around.

Neutral tones are especially practical in the world of decoration because their neutrally means they can easily be teamed up with other colors. Warm colors make a room seem smaller and more homey, a place where we can retreat to unwind.

There are many techniques for increasing the expressiveness of the walls and for making your home a place where you feel at ease. Many neutral tones are associated with natural materials, stone, earth, wood, straw, sand or with artificial materials such as metal, glass, and concrete.

Here are ten household helpful hints for choosing colors and wall covering fabrics to decorate your home:

1. White and neutral tones are an ideal backdrop to make a work of art or tapestry stand out.

2. Neutral tones should be applied when a space is overloaded architecturally, or when we want something to fade into the background.

3. Neutral tones age well so they can be used where you do not redecorate, or touch up, very often; or if our intention is to specifically create an aged effect.

4. Variations on neutral tones are ideal for small rooms.

5. White and neutral tones are a great way of combining different decorative styles as they act as a neutral transition zone between one style and the other.

6. Gray metal or gray concrete, two neutral tones, are especially apt for creating modern ambience with a cutting edge feel.

7. Textured neutral tones, like limestone or temperate paint, are perfect for creating rustic effects.

8. Neutral tones fabrics, carpets, curtains, or tapestries are a great help when decorating because they go well with al the colors.

9. If you want a room steeped in neutral tones to be livelier, you can introduce a few dramatic color touches dark colors, even black, are a good solution.

10. A neutral tone is perfect for painting a wall or doors that you want to be inconspicuous.
