It's just a book. The only thing that lets it be perceived as truth is the faith by christians that their religion is true, and that the book must also be something more than fiction.
In my opinion, you shouldn't look in the bible. If your personal religious bent requires it, then fine, but remember that if taken literally there's a lot of jibberish and contradiction in there... don't take any bit too seriously, and stay with the spirit of the book overall instead. Too many otherwise intelligent people look to a book to do their thinking for them, and miss the opportunity to have their own thoughts on the issues at hand, and so miss the opportunity to find solutions to their problems. It's sad to see, unless you're a church and just want a herd of dependant people to "save."

First of all, every book is written by human beings. If you're looking for the answers in a book, you're going to be reading the thoughts of people.
Moreover, there's no way of knowing that the Bible isn't made up. You also don't know, of course, that it's not the truth. From experience with lots of other books, however, I doubt if the Bible is absolute truth, and I doubt that the Bible is worthless garbage, either.
No matter what you think about it, the only way to satisfy your curiosity (obviously you're curious, you wouldn't have asked the question otherwise) is to give it a read. Better yet, find someone else (or several people) to read it with and bounce your ideas off of one another. It helps to glean opinions from a variety of sources, including those who believe as well as those who don't believe. I think you will learn a lot from the experience!

Well, first off
God/Jesus said if you love me , you will keep my commandments.
How are you going to know what these commandments are if you do not read them?
God says in the bible that the only way to him is through his son Jesus. How are you going to know how to do this if you do not read it?
How to know it is not a made up story. We as humans cannot make a circle of 20 people and give one sentance to the first one and have the twentieth person repeat the same sentence.
Say for instance that the first person is given the sentance:
Bob and Julie went to Church, searching for answers to basic questions.
By the time the twentieth person repeats the sentance, it might be come something like:
Bob went to Walmart to get groceries.
The bible was written by more than one person, and its stories are told and retold in amazing detail and continuity. These books were written hundreds of years apart and by people who had never met each other or lived at the same time. The only exception is the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
They were live witnessess to very important events, and all tell the same story, some with more detail than others, but all tell the same truths, without contradictions.
Knowing human nature and our inability to tell the same story to another and have it retold in the same way, I see the bible as inspired by GOD and retold in a correctness that we cannot obtain.

While it is true that times have changed, basic human needs have remained the same. People throughout history have had a need for love and affection. They have wanted to be happy and to lead meaningful lives. They have needed advice on how to cope with economic pressures, how to make a success of marriage, and how to instill good moral and ethical values in their children. The Bible contains advice that addresses those basic needs.—Ecclesiastes 3:12, 13; Romans 12:10; Colossians 3:18-21; 1Â Timothy 6:6-10.
The Bible’s counsel reflects a keen awareness of human nature
It even gives practical guidance that promotes good mental
health. Scientific studies have established the harmful effects of anger.Thousands of years before such scientific studies, the Bible, in simple but clear terms, made a connection between our emotional state and our physical health: “A calm heart is the life of the fleshly organism, but jealousy is rottenness to the bones.” (Proverbs 14:30; 17:22) Wisely, the Bible counseled: “Let anger alone and leave rage,” and “Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended [or “angry,” King James Version].”—Psalm 37:8; Ecclesiastes 7:9
These are just a few examples of what benefit the Bible can provide for our daily lives.

You can know that the Bible is true based on these facts.
It was written by over 40 different writers spanning 1500 years without any contridiction. The Bible is a collection of 66 books, not one signle book. The only expination that makes any sense is that this is the inspired word of God.

I challenge you to go to the following website and take their free Bible Prophecy studies. They will prove to you that through history and archaeological sources, some just within the last 50 years, have proven that the Bible is true. The Bible was written by humans that were INSPIRED by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God - and I personally would be a bit leery and embarrassed by challenging Him.
Will you go take the studies? Or will you continue in your belief without full knowledge?

2 Timothy 3:16,17 "All scripture is inspired of God (he inspired the men who wrote it. The thought's are God's thoughts men just wrote them down) , and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, that the man of God may be fully competent, completly equipped for every good work." Joshua 1:8 "This book of the law should not depart from your mouth, and you must in an undertone read in it day and night, in order that you may take care to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way successful and then you will act wisely." Although that was spoken of the law givin to Isreal...it applies to us now with the Bible as a whole. Following God's laws can lead us the right way and preveny many downfalls. If we ALL followed God's laws then we would be without so many problems on this Earth. If you would like to know more feel free to contact me anytime.

The bible has a solid foundation of basic common sense that can be applied to most of our daily life's. The ten commandments, if practiced by all would solve a lot of our social and world problems. I am a true non-believer but some lessons are rock solid and should not be rejected because of the source.

Only the Holy Spirit can does that. God said that his words are sharper than two edges swords. If you read it and find it inaccurate, then you are not included in those who has predestined to believe. It's how God plan the bible to be. Jesus said that some will hear the word, but they will not believe, for if they believe they will be saved. Satan will not allow his children to believe and be saved. Go read Matthew13:15 and 19
