Well, it is easier to put in specialized facilities in one or the other (urinals in the Men's, pad/tampon dispensers in the Women's). Also, the urinals in a Men's room are out in the open, and I'm told that it's embarassing enough for other men to be there. I'm sure they wouldn't want a woman to see their privates.
The thing I don't get is how some places have those smaller bathrooms that just have the one toilet, instead of several stalls, and they still have separate Men's and Women's rooms. That seems stupid since those bathrooms don't have specialized facilities, just a toilet, and there's never two people in there at once.

They are not always seperate. When I was a student living in the dorms at UC Santa Cruz ('84-'85,) the restrooms on the co-ed halls were also co-ed. There was a girls-only hall and a boys-only hall with similar restrictions on the restrooms, but these were the exception.
I think if most public restrooms were co-ed, there would either be a lot of women learning how to "hold it in" for a long time, or a lot of men forced to wait longer than they are accustomed.

Women have periods we don't want to be in a stall next to a man while we are attending ourselves. Nor do we want to take a #2 in a stall next a guy or in the same room with some strange guy and then have to look at them. This is a stupid question.

Maybe because blokes merely stand at urinals in full view of other users of the place, and personally I could do without watching that any time soon.
