Unfortunately, spell check doesn't always work. And, also unfortunately, more people spend most of their times entertaining their eyes with TV and videos than with the written word. Many parents are letting electronics babysit their kids, so they get most of their knowledge about words from school, which has also been sadly lacking now days. The average person doesn't do any more reading than they have to, and for kids, that's less than 10 minutes a day. How can anyone expect a kid to know how to spell or make a sentence if that's all the time they spend reading? I'm not talking about the majority, but they know who they are. And many people are texting their friends, using parts of words or initials, and that's the way some of their posts read, making it hard for anyone to understand their question. It starts with holding your babies on your lap and reading to them. Then spending time with them over homework and projects, helping them understand & learn. I really don't think a lot of people are illiterate here, just lazy. I have a dictionary next to my computer, to look up words I'm not sure about because the spell check is often out of order (believe it or not!). So, I'm with you, friend, on the fact that many don't take the time to make sure their questions are understandable, and at least make more of an attempt at spelling out the whole word instead of initials. And if I've made a boo-boo, I'm so sorry. Sometimes I don't catch all my boo-boos. But, I keep trying anyway. <*)))><

Hey.

Well, it usually gets to me when people spell wrong. Some people are lazy, some people have the habit. I'm 16-years-old and I'm glad I didn't start typing like some others do. It's amazing how adults also type wrong. I won't blame people who actually don't know how to spell... it's not their fault. However, I don't seem to think it's easy and fun to type like 'c y l8ter' in fact it takes longer... but then again they become experts. I don't have Yahoo spell check on this computer so I'll go over again...

Having said that, I can't afford to care anymore :)

look okay i don't mean to be rude when i say this but honestly what do u think, its not called being lazy it's called just using computer. When u r using a computer u don't have to write every word to try to let someone else figure out what u r saying it is so that u don't have to type all this crazy stuff that u just abreviate what u r writing thats all its not being illeterate or anything like that its just called not writing everything but for u to come and tell someone that they r illeterate cause they don't put every word how do u think u sound its a computer we are not writing a story so it shouldn't matter ur the only one checking someone grammar but whatever i dont want to be rude just thought u need a reality check so i checked u.

Hahahaha. You're commenting about other peoples grammar, but your grammar is pretty bad too. I agree though. I can say without hyperbole, at least 50% of the questions on this site I cannot answer because they are so poorly written and/or vauge. It especially pisses me off when people ask questions like "y does my sistas bf cheat on her?" It's not even so much the misspelling I frown on, it's just the complete lack of logic people display on this site. But I guess I typed like a retard when I was 13 too, so I can't get too angry. I think people who say "its just computer talk so its we abbreveate u r... etc" were probably born with a computer on their lap because they're young. So they actually do view the computer as an integral form of communication, subject to slang and shortcuts like any language. Whereas people who are like 19+ still see the computer as a tool, not a way of life.

TO ALL YOUNGSTERS: If you want to be taken seriously on the internet, by anyone older then 14, stop typing like retards.

I understand you point and sometimes it's annoying because the question or answer will not make sense. However, It would not be fair to call it illiteracy, there are people of all ages and different countries too, don't expect all to be English professionals. Also, many people type fast and are may be just lazy of using the spell check....

There's no such word as "spelt," as far as I know. The term is "spelled." And the contraction "that's," short for "that is," requires an apostrophe.

But you see the point: English is an enormously complex language, and even native speakers with a good education can make mistakes. (Geez, even ME!!!) But many of these people are not native speakers, and many more had lousy educations. I count there 95% of those who went to American public schools. They don't really teach English anymore, and certainly not writing skills. They teach "language arts" and "self-expression." Don't worry about whether or not anyone can understand you. Just compare yourself to James Joyce, and you can be a snob about your lousy language skills.

P.S. ninababygurl, thank you for a classic illustration of just what we are discussing. No capitalization, no punctuation, and lots of trivial abbreviations. If we do not call that lazy, what do we call it?

wat u sey? U dont like mi righting? lol

Sometimes it is because they have poor typing skills. I believe most are lazy and fail to proof read their entry. Clearly, many are simply poor writers. Unfortunately, Yahoo does not offer the spell check feature throughout YA.

What annoys me are the incomplete answers. "Yes" and "No" are not answers. An answer should restate the question, provide an opinion, give supporting information or an example then a conclusion.

Most of the time I use spell check (sometimes I forget or my parents kick me off so I just click 'continue') but other than that, I think my grammar/spelling is good.
