The Chakra system originated in India. It is a traditional yogic understanding of the flow of energy in the body. The word "Chakra" actually means "wheel of light", and is a name for the main energy centers in the body.

However, it also corresponds, generally, to the accupuncture system of China. The Chinese system is (slightly) newer, but is much more detailed. The Chakras are the major junctures of accupuncture channels.

Other cultures around the world have identified many of the same centers in the body. An Apache medicine man told me that they have identified five "wheels of light" in the body, but he didn't know what a Chakra was.

"The chakras are described in the tantric texts the Sat-Cakra-Nirupana, and the Padaka-Pancaka, in which they are described as emanations of consciousness from Brahman, an energy which comes down from the spiritual and gradually crudifies, creating these distinct levels of chakras, and which eventually finds its rest in the Muladhara chakra."

This is an Indian text -- so I would have to say it originate in India, although there are currently forms of it used in China, Japan, and, of course, the Western New Age Movement.

A really great book to read about the chakra system is called 'Eastern Body, Western Mind' by Anodea Judith. It's long but so worth it.

In India and Southeast Asia it comes from the Vedic.
The Sanskrit word "cakra" (written chakra in English) means "wheel" or "disk". It has been described by many as a spinning wheel of light. Of the many chakras within the human body, seven have been identified as major.
