My dog has have chronic diarrhea for the last couple of months and yesterday started having some bright red blood in her poop. She seems fine otherwise, most of the time. mostly normal energy levels, doesn't seem to be losing weight, appetite seems fairly normal. I have no idea what is wrong except maybe stress. I've had her to the vet and the vet can't find anything wrong with her. What might her problem be??

my dog isn't dehydrated, they've done giardia tests, parasite testing, fecal tests, and she doesn' thave a parasite, or a bacteria, they put her on antibiotics for a couple weeks and I've chnged her diet and nothing has helped. The only thing I can think of is colitis or irritable bowel syndrome, but I'm not sure if that's what it could be.

Does your dog play with sticks of wood? or any other pieces of wood? My dog had a similar problem and I found out it was because he was chewing on sticks and swallowing the pieces, which then caused him to have bloody diahrea. Also when my dog was young he could not eat any foods with alot of corn and it made him have diahrea also....You may try switching your dogs food to a brand such as...Nutro Natural Choice, Natural Balance, Solid Gold, Performatrin, or Nutrience.

Ps my dog had diarhea for the first 3 months I had him and the vet could not diagnose the problem (although there was no blood) and the problem did not go away until I switched to a better brand of food with no corn or chicken or by-products. I reccommend alternative proteins such as Lamb, duck, venison, bison, beef, salmon..all of the foods listed below have these types of formula and I highly reccomend switching the dogs food...also many of the regular brands do not have the bacteria included for healthy digestive tracts Performatrin and some of the other foods do. You want to see these probiotics in your dogs food....They regulate the digestive tract and without them diahrea is often the result.

Lactobacillus Acidophilus (Probiotic)
Bacillus Subtilis (Probiotic)
Bifidobacterium Thermophilum (Probiotic)
Bifidobacterium Longum (Probiotic)
Enterococcus Faecium (Probiotic)

See another vet!
Blood in the stool is an amazingly bad sign, and nobody here on Y!A should be attempting to diagnose this based on the little info we have. This should be taken to a professional. If your vet can't figure this out, see another vet or go to a local university animal hospital (like, if a local college/uni has a veterinary school). Poor puppy.... Good luck....

PS. No disrepsect to fajitacita meant, I didn't see that answer before starting mine. But these symptoms could also mean: cancer, celiac disease, gastroenteritis, food poisoning, etc etc etc. Hence what I meant by saying, a professional needs to handle it. Because of so many things it could be....

Diarrhea that lasts for more than a day could be a sign of more serious problems, including obstructions in the digestive tract or illnesses such as cancer or parvovirus infection. If your dog's diarrhea persists for more than 24 hours, it's a good idea to consult with your veterinarian.

When a dog is brought in to a veterinarian's office with a case of diarrhea, one of the first things that the veterinarian will try to determine is whether the diarrhea is small bowel diarrhea or large bowel diarrhea.

Large bowel diarrhea is usually not indicative of serious systemic disease. It is caused by an inflammation of the large intestine and is often accompanied by small amounts of bright-red blood in the stool. "It is very alarming to see the blood, and most people call their veterinarian immediately. Large bowel diarrhea is most often caused by a "dietary indiscretion" that inflames the large bowel; it can also be caused by something as simple as emotional stress.

Diarrhea that results in a black, tarlike, sticky stool is a sign of bleeding in the small intestine and suggests a serious problem. There are many things that can cause small intestinal bleeding, including liver disease, ulcers, the ingestion of rat poison, or the presence of bone splinters that tear up the intestines, The tarlike substance in the stool is digested blood. If you see this, contact your veterinarian immediately!

Hope this helps! Goodluck :)

If the vet ruled everything out like Giardia, coccidia, Parvo, etc. Then it is fully possibly somebody gave her a food she is not used to. Buddabones made by nylabones can make my dog have the runs. Make sure to keep your dog hydrated, the runs will dehydrate a dog.
When a dog gets used to one diet then are given something they are not used to they can get the runs.

did they do a giardia test. you may need to change it's diet. I would probably see another vet., there can be several reasons why this is happening. since it is diarrhea don't let it get dehydrated. one way to see if it is dehydrated is by pulling up the skin if it goes down really really slow then the dog is dehydrated.

stop all food. esp. chicken dog food. try her on nutro's lamb and rice. for sensitive eaters. this worked in one day for all 3 of my great danes who were "too loose" on a chicken based dog food. with chicken dog food the "by products" means they use heads, beaks, feet, feathers!, bones, veins,,, all of it, but the chicken we eat. so use lamb and your trouble should be over. if it is not there is a blockages or something and he needs more vet.
