I have researched a little and found a lot of the same answer. But is there a different definition, that doesn't deal with dying for a cause? The reason I ask, my horoscope today said "isn't it time you stopped being the martyr?". I am looking for a broader definition, other than the traditional definition.

Someone who feels sorry for themselves. My mother uses that term frequently with others. :)

Martyr is a person who suffers or even dies for a major cause

Someone who dies for a cause. The most famous ones are religious martyrs who died for what they believed in.

Someone who died for their religion, before 1965 if you were a martyr you were automatically named a saint.

it can be anyone that dies or goes to prison for a cause and the cause doesnt have to be a nobal one,it can be a terroist blowing himself up ,he then becomes an inspiration to other terroists.....it can be both good and bad
