Verse 14 "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."
In the surrounding passages we are told that John the baptist came to point out this person to us. The Word is clearly Jesus Christ and the point is that Jesus Christ is God and was with God at the beginning of time. He has always been.

When you look at the whole context of these verses you must read further into the chapter to discover that Jesus is the Word. You will also discover that Jesus created our world.
These verses mean that Jesus existed in Heaven before he was born into this world as a human. (Using this belief, you could argue the point of reincarnation, but that theory is not found anywhere else in the Bible, and can not be supported.) Since Jesus is God, and laid down His earthly life for me, I know that He is alive and well in Heaven again.

John presents God as speaking salvation of existence. God's Word takes on a human form and enters history in the person of Jesus. Jesus speaks the word and it happens:forgiveness and judgment, healing, illumination, mercy and grace, joy and love, freedom and ressurection.Everything broken and fallen, sinful and diseased, called into salvation by God's spoken word.
Jesus not only speaks the word of God: He is the Word of God. We do not casually walk away from the word like that!
This also tells me that God was here in the beginning. So world was created by Him. Everything seen and usnseen, called into being bt God's spoken word. Created for cause. Created for God's purpose. Colossians 1:16 says " For everything, absolutely everything, above and below, visible and invisible...everything got started in Him and finds its purpose in Him"
So this means to me that it is not about me. The purpose of my life is far greater than my own personal fulfillment,my peace of mind, or even my happiness. I was born by His purpose and for His purpose. That is why I let god to use me for His purposes.
You were made by God and for God...Until you understand that, life will never make sense. You are not an accident. "I am your Creator. You were in my care even before you were born" ( Isaiah 44:2 )
Even Albert Einsten said " God does not play dice". This life is not all there is. Eccalestiastes 3:11 "God has...planted eternity in the human heart. We are made to last forever. So I think that the most damaging aspect of contemporary living is short term thinking. The death is not the end of me,so there are eternal consequenses to everything I do on earth. I to learn to see LIFE from the God's view.

Word = Jesus
God = Heavenly Father
Word was God = Jesus is a God... with same purpose as Heavenly Father... and ... he is God of the Old Testament... the one who physically created the earth and who spoke to the Prophets....
He was in the beginning with God = Jesus lived with God in Heaven

The term "word" here is a reference to Jesus.
Read it again and replace the word "word" with the name "Jesus."
Next, look down further in the chapter to verse 14:
"And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth."

Scholars disagree on what the Word is. I feel it is the energy that creates the physical world. All Christians should read this short, uplifting story of a minister overcoming depression so they can avoid ever getting it !

Jesus first existed as the word. During the creation when God said" Let US make man in our image", the us is referring to him and Jesus his son.

John rewrote Genesis to reflect his belief. All he's saying is that Jesus was with God during the Creation.
