I'd wait for a while after the baby is born before you get another dog. A pup is best, because it will grow up with the baby and be used to it. A Dane is not the best choice for little kids, because they are clumsy and play rough. I'd recommend a Sporting dog like a Springer Spaniel or a Lab or a Golden with babies and small kids.

Find a breed rescue organization by going to www.akc.org - you can get an older dog for less money. Be VERY careful about getting a shelter dog with young children. You are often adopting someone else's problem dog. And people often lie about the dog's temperament, hoping he'll get a new home that can deal with him.

I imagine the last thing you will have time for after your wife gives birth is new dog, whether puppy or adult. Wait until well after the baby comes, then ask yourself if you really want to adopt a dog, and if you have time to give the dog. If there isn't enough time to devote do the poor dog a favor and don't adopt.

I have 3 Great Danes. I also had Danes around when my Daughter was young. In my opinion you couldn't have a better breed around children.

I think it is great that you are wanting to adopt a dog. sorry about the greatdane. I would wait till your wife gave birth and after that I would get a puppy. we all know how puppies act. but i believe the puppy will have to be taught how to act around a baby and they can grow up together learning kind of how to act around one another. I am worried about this situation myself i have a 2 yr old boston and we are talking about having a baby I hope everthing will work out. she is a sweet dog normally good around children and with a good temperment.

If your thinking of adopting an adult, wait until after the baby is here. Dogs can be territorial. If your thinking about a puppy, wait longer. Wife won't have time to recover, deal with baby and you and train a puppy.

It shouldn't be a problem, just as long as your wife doesn't handle the dog's messes. It's better to get a puppy though, but an older one may be calmer around a baby. I suggest playing a tape of a baby crying around the dog so he can get used to a baby being around.
