The only reason I could say be an atheist would be if God didn't exist at all. But we know He does, so I guess you are asking something that you can never become. :)

Being an atheist means that the suffering we see in the world is not happening at the whim of an all-powerful creator who has the power, but seemingly not the desire, to stop it. I understand the "free-will" argument, but if "god is love," which we hear all the time, why does he allow such things as war and famine to happen? It doesn't add up.

Being an atheist means that you are not resigned to live under a regime that deals in fear and hangs the threat of eternal punishment over your head daily.

Being an atheist means that you will do the right thing because it is the right thing to do, not to garner some reward or avoid being punished.

I realize that many of these things can be accomplished within the confines of religion, but the most important part of being an atheist has nothing to do with these thing.

The most important part of being an atheist is giving up (for those of you who have it) the need to seek the approval of supernatural beings. They or He or She or whomever is not out there, never mind keeping tabs on what you do.

You misspelled christianity.

Being an atheist is not something you can be talked into. You must open your critical, logical, and rational thinking brain and really question the foundation that your religion sits on. Once you do this you will see how diluted and fallacious religion is.

Atheism is a default position. It is the logical outcome after years of scientific advancements. If you are happy living your life for a god that you have zero evidence for, thats your choice. However, you only have to look at the mistaken assumptions of your religious ancestors to get a glimpse at the future of your god.

Being an atheist wasn't an option for me, as some people here in YA has proposed. I just find the whole god concept proposed by the religions I've studied as being anything but plausible. For me, trying to believe in god is like trying to believe that the tooth fairy is real. It just was the result of questioning everything.

My wish for everyone is that they're educated and mature enough to decide whatever they want without following any kind of indoctrination. I was indoctrinated to believe in god and to think atheists were bad persons, it was a long process to be able to shake those ideas, particularly the later, I was ashamed to say I was an atheist, despite I knew I was one, but I was always told atheists were immoral and selfish.

I don't think anyone should be an Atheist unless it feels right. Atheism isn't based on a central theme. It's based on a lack of one. If you can't just take someone's word for something..
If you don't beleive that the universe was created by something intelligent...
If you require evidence to back up your beleifs....
If you feel comfortable with the fact that when you die, you are dead...
Then and only then should you consider identifying yourself as an Atheist.
My wife is an Agnostic. She knows that she doesn't know, and doesn't think that she can know. If that's you, claim to be an Agnostic.

In order to know that there is no God, you would have to know everything about the universe, which would define you as God. Since nobody is omniscient enough to know for a fact that God does not exist, the best anyone can be is an agnostic. Atheism is impossible.

If you are confident in christianity, no one can tell you why you should be an athiest.

You have to learn more about christianity and religions in general before you could accept that there is no god.

You have to be willing to question your own beliefs and those of others.

You have to be willing not to take things on faith, and look at documented evidence.

But that takes work. Its much easier being told what and why to believe isnt it?

Which is the point of your question: Tell me why I should believe?

Thats not how athiesm works. You should start by asking yourself why you believe what you do.

Atheism is NOT a religion. It is a word that someone decided to come up with to describe those that do not believe in something after this life. So, there is no reason for you to become an atheist, other than your own personal beliefs.

um, most atheists don't care.

if you're confidant in christianity that's good, lol.

atheism isn't a club, there's no one telling us we need to make as many people atheist as possible.

if you believe in god, i'm not going to tell you that you should be an atheist, i'm going to tell you that you should be a monotheist of whatever denomination you choose.

atheism is right for me, and as an atheist i understand it isn't right for everyone. so i can't tell you why you should change, because my reasons won't fit your life, education, experiences, or morals. that's just the way it is. sorry if this isn't the answer you were expecting.

Because the TRUTH shall set you free ;-)

Free from the superstitions and myths of the dark ages.

Free from the dimwitted friends and juvenile adults filling the religious community.

Free from the narrow-minded, judgmental fundamentalist mind virus.

Instead, choose to live boldly and confidently in knowing the TRUTH of your reality -

A life based in fear and ignorance is no way to go through life, my friend!

If your confident and comfortable with Christianity.... I think you are right where you need to be...

I don't think anyone could tell you why you should be one... They could present their beliefs!!! I don't think atheist have a recruiting program... I hope that the atheists out there are just that because they feel it in their hearts. They believe a scientific path... Just as Christians follow their hearts!
