If you have a job, many stores, especially clothing stores aimed at teens, will let you have a credit card at 16, without parents signature. Usually there is a $250 credit limit on these.

I would recommend discussing it with your parent/s first, though, because they will find out, and won't be happy if you just did it without their knowledge.

In my opinion, this is a good opportunity to learn to use credit wisely ... i.e. paying off the balance each month, as you can't get far in debt with the limits.

DO learn to use credit wisely if you plan on using it at all ... it is always better to live within your means (don't spend more than you earn, including living expenses), and only put on credit what you know you can pay off each month.

This is a good way to start establishing a good credit rating for yourself, which will help you find an apartment, get a car, and all those other things in adult life.

In the US, you must be at least 18 to enter into a legally binding contract (this includes credit cards)

If a bank gives you a credit card before you are 18 and you default (ie, fail to pay) they cannot do anything to collect the money from you...even after you turn 18.

So, unless someone over 18 is on the account with you, its going to be very difficult.
