If it came with the cd loaded then you want to press F10 when the system starts up. This will take you to the installation of the operating system.

Recovery CD is not going to help you recover data. Recovery CD is only for reinstalling the Operating system. While installing the operating system, if you do not format the hard drive then you may have a chance in getting the data back.

There are couple of things you can try. First, try going in to safe mode and choose "Use last known good configuration." To go in to safe mode, reboot your PC then press and hold the [F8] key. See if this solves some of your problems. If it doesn't then try returning your sysem to an earlier state using system restore. The most important thing is recovering your files. If at all possible save them on to removable media like CD or DVD.

You are going to need a Windows Installation CD to reinstall Windows. There is no way around it - for the most part. It doesn't need to be your Windows Installation CD. Asking a friend or co-worker who has the CD and install it on to your laptop. As long as you use your own Windows XP product key, it doesn't matter whose installation CD you use. Before doing anything, download and install Keyfinder

Keyfinder is a very small program that searches your computer and displays your Windows product key. This is the product key you are going to use to activate Windows OS.

a recovery CD is to wipe out your hard drive and rebuild it, not to recover data. The only way to recover data is to have a tech put it in a special tool to hook it to another pc to get the data off. If it still is recoverable.
