I am just becoming interested in boxing. I admire Arturo Gatti. Is it too late for me to start boxing? Are there any professional boxers who started late? Thanks.

Definitely not! I don't box, but I know someone that does. He's only been boxing for about 2yrs now and he's doing well. He's 21yrs old. It takes time and of course you'll have to pay your dues, but in the end it will be well worth it!

My advice: If you're truly serious about being a boxer, then do whatever it takes. I can tell you now, it's no joke. The guy I know runs 10miles every morning. Walks for 20 minutes in the evening. Has to watch everything he eats and can only eat certain things. He was 162lbs and had to lose 12lbs to fit into his weight class. He goes to the gym 5-6days a week. It's rugged and you must have a passion for it. Don't start if you don't want to put your heart into it. Anything other then your all would be a waste of time!

Best Wishes!

If you are talking pro, 18 is perfect. No state will license you as a pro under 18.

If you are talking amateur, you can definately box. Additional medical regulations and restrictions kick in once you hit 35.

Many states will not license you as a pro over 36 absent exceptional circumstances.

In all cases I reccomend seeing your doctor for a full physical before you start and each year thereafter, to include neurologic testing and a CT scan of your head (every 5 years on the CT), and blood tests for HIV and hepatitis B and C (every 6 months to 1 yr on the blood test, check with your state boxing commission)

As a former boxer I can tell you this. You can start boxing whenever you choose. I started at age 20 and it was a blast, I got in great shape and quick to. I was focused and my endurance shot up. You will not be paired up with people with 8-10 years of experience that is frankly a big fat load. They match you up by experience level and record. You will never see someone with a 40-5 record against someone who is 5-0 unless they are some tremendous boxer who is climbing his way up a tournament ladder. 18 is a great age to start, your young and it's way easier for you to get into shape then say a 30 year old. GO FOR IT!

Yes think about it. Youre to old to fight 17 and 16 yaer olds beacause you now an adult, and the rest of the people will have been fighting and trainging for about 8-10 years

Rocky Marciano joined the army at 20. That's where he started, he went pro months away from his 24th birthday. He was considerably older and look at what he did. Go for it.

No. you just need to have determination and you should have a goal to achieve. And if you are really focused to that goal, you can be a good boxer.
