An excellent textbook I read said that depression was on a long gradated scale from feeling slightly off to being suicidal and / or maybe psychotic from the pain of depression.
Any kind of anxiety or feeling down that interferes with your work or social life has to be looked at with a degree of concern.
I would suggest always act before you know, because most people would probably underdiagnose themselves.
Any help or intervention should begin with lifestyle initiatives.

I will try and answer this as if I have not just got a text book out, for you. Depression usually feels like you have no energy and you can not be bothered to do anything, even things you normally enjoy. You may feel sad but you don't have to be sad to be depressed. With Anxiety you will probably get worried about small things you used to take in your stride.

You would usually experience some of the symptoms listed below;
Loss of appitite, loss of weight, poor sleep (trouble getting to sleep, waking frequently, early morning waking), lack of motivation and enthusiasm, loss of libio, increased worrying thoughts, feeling very low in mood for a prolonged period, suicidal thoughts, thoughts of self harm, panic attaks.
These symptoms are to name but a few. If you think you may be suffering from depression and / or anxiety, speak to you doctor. They will assess you and recommend a suitable course of treatment (which is not always medication - anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medication will not take a situation away if it is something particular that is causing you to feel this way.)

Excessive worrying, "what if" thinking, crying spells, thoughts of suicide, loss or appetite, insomnia, dramatic mood swings, feeling worthless like no ones cares about you.
Anxiety: "what if" thinking, nervousness, panic attacks, sweating, heart palpitations, hyperventilating, the need to escape a certain situation or place, avoiding normal everyday things for the fear of having an anxiety attack.
There are a ton of symptoms, all of which are easily treatable with proper medication and counseling.

hiya, hope u are ok; following is information on depression and anxiety - symtoms, if u are feeling like this then i would sugest visiting ure GP who could refer u for counselling / therapy and prescribe medication. keep ure chin up.
If you are depressed you often lose interest in things that you used to enjoy. Depression commonly interferes with your work, social and family life. In addition, there are many other symptoms, which can be physical, psychological, and social.
Psychological symptoms:
continuous low / ‘blue’ mood or sadness;
feelings of hopelessness and helplessness;
low self-esteem;
tearfulness;
feelings of guilt;
feeling irritable and intolerance of others;
lack of motivation, and little interest in and difficulty making decisions;
lack of enjoyment;
suicidal thoughts / thoughts of harming someone else;
feeling anxious or worried;
reduced sex drive.
Physical symptoms:
slowed movement / speech;
change in appetite / weight (usually decreased but sometimes increased);
constipation;
unexplained aches and pains;
lack of energy / lack of interest in sex; and
changes to the menstrual cycle (in women).
Social symptoms:
not performing well at work;
taking part in fewer social activities and avoiding contact with friends;
reduced hobbies and interests, and difficulties in home and family life.
The main symptom of anxiety disorder is persistent worrying, which can stop you from getting on with your life and normal daily activities. You may worry about a lot of different things at once, and feel anxious even when there’s no particular reason to worry. You can’t stop or control these feelings.
You will often have the following symptoms:
restlessness and difficulty relaxing,
feeling very tired much of the time,
finding it difficult to concentrate on any one task and tendency for your mind to ‘go blank’,
feeling irritable most of the time, muscle tension, sometimes leading to muscle pains.
The tension can also make you feel shaky, and restless sleep - you may have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Anxiety disorder can also cause physical symptoms.
These include:
headaches
pains in your joints,
feeling breathless,
palpitations,
tightness or pain in your chest,
dry mouth,
sweating,
flushing,
nausea,
stomach pains, and
diarrhoea.
obviously to be depressed have anxiety u dont necessarily have al of the symptoms and everyone is different, please do seek support.

Most likely your sleeping patterns would be disturbed. You may also suffer from lack of concentration or even forgetfulness.
It can also effect your appetite, your social live, love life etc.
These conditions can be different fromperson to person and sometime "symptoms" are not apparent, but can creep up on you.
