The answer is yes, but sort of cruel. If you get two of them, it would be much better. A kitten left alone is frightened, lonely, and very very upset.
Try to get two. If you can't, then at least leave blankets, a ticking clock next to the blanket, perhaps a very quiet soothing radio left on, lots of food and water. The second you wake up and get home put it on your shoulder and leave it there. Touch, talk, look in its eyes, and love as many hours a day as you can. Scratch and rub. It needs the 3 T's, touch, talk, and time, just like people do.
Kittens are usually in a pack, and they are very upset when alone.

Why do you want a kitten if you arent going to be there for it? Get a turtle or something that doesnt feel lonely and let someone who can be home take the kitten.
You must realize that kittens turn into cats; a kitten that grows up on its own is usually the oen who winds up in a shelter where it is killed becasue it hasnt formed a bond with its owner because the owner was too involved in their own life to be all that concerned about the cat. LEAVE the kitten where it is - You are too busy to have a cat.
Think of the animal's needs first..Please...

Kittens tend to need a lot of attention at first. They need to know that when you leave you are going to come back. My 16 year old cat could care less if I am there or not most of the time. He spends most of his time asleep so yes I can leave him for extended periods of time. I obviously have to work to pay for his food and he does fine all day. I have also had no trouble with him if he has had to stay by himself over night. He knows that I will be coming home eventually and as long as he has food and gets attention when he wants it he is fine.

Yes, but you will need to put the kitty in a single room (this room will always then be the safe room that kitty will run to later when scared) don't let it run the house. You will need to kitty proof that room also put it's litter pan, food, water and something to claw on, toys and a kitty bed in there. When you leave make sure that you leave all these things for the kitty also turn on the radio (volume - low) on a station with soothing music. I work so I am usually gone several hours a day though little little kitties need to be fed several times a day so leave dry food out. The kitty should be fine though right when you get home you need to check on him first before you do anything else to see if the kitty needs something also because it will start to meow right after it hears that you are home. Mommy mommy come give me some attention, play with me, love me!!!!!!!!!!!!!meow - meow - meow!!
Good luck in getting your kitty :)

You said cats(plural) that does make a difference.. you said "for hours"... not sure what that means.. does it mean 5 hours.. 8 hours... 24 hours? In general.. keep in mind that cats(indoor cats) are people orientated.. They have their master.. that is you.. Yes. they can be left alone for hours as long as they have sufficient water/feed. In fact, you said two or more cats.. they can be left alone for 2-3 days but not advisable unless a type of emergency.. With two or more cats, they can have each other company. with just one cat... it is more difficult because they are all alone without the one person they want to keep connection with and that is YOU.

While the kitten is very little, try to spend as much time with her as you can. Other than that, many cats seem to get along quite well by themselves for a reasonable amount of time. They are not as dependent upon their owners as dogs are. Just be sure she has adequate food and water, and that the house is neither too hot nor too cold. And provide a litter box that you keep clean, of course. A "cat house" for her to climb along with a few toys would be nice. Hope you enjoy your kitty as much as I enjoy mine.

Yeah, they can be left alone for a little while, but they don't like it. It's because they love and miss you. Don't get a cat and think you can just abandon it for days at a time. That's cruel...
