I will be making 100+ miles each day on weekdays. While gas economy is important, security and at least a 4 door is a preferable since I've been driving a 2-door for a period of time now and we've had to rent cars when going camping, etc. I am thinking also to perhaps sell the car after a year as I'll have the chance to move closer to my destination, so I'm concerned about how much value of the car I can keep over the year despite the mileage.

Thank you for all the answers/recommendations.

Hey, here's some really good choices for your budget and specifications.. all of them get decent gas mileage, are safe, and have a really good reputation: Chevrolet Impala, Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Chevrolet Malibu, Dodge Stratus, Chrysler Sebring, Pontiac Grand AM, Pontiac Grand Prix, or a Oldsmobile Alero. I suggest that you don't go with anything foreign because the insurance will be higher. Of course, all of these cars would have anywhere between 50,000 to 90,000 miles; always look for a good deal (obviously) but remember that if you are only going to have this car for about a year that miles aren't that big of a deal. Good Luck and I hope you find what you are looking for.

Take a look at Consumer Reports issue on used cars. ANY used car should be looked at by a mechanic before you buy. Even if it costs you a $100 for an inspection, that is far cheaper than buying a lemon. I would always go with low-mileage and condition over price. In general, you will pay more at a dealership, but the guarantee might be worth the difference. I like American cars, but a good used Honda is hard to beat.

Ford Taurus , Pontaic Grand Prix, or Chevy Monte Carlo. All are a little bigger, so you can use them to haul more. And all are failry good on gas mileage.
