Let me say that I am not asking WHY bridges were built, but HOW they are built! What sustains the hovering part over the bridge without any support underneath?

Many different kinds of long span bridges (steel girders, concrete beams, suspension, cable stayed, arches, etc.). Check out http://pghbridges.com/basics.htm for some basic information.
Support during construction can be by cantilevers, cables from above, scaffolding from below, and more.
