I've heard about grown men dying after 19 and 50 shots of tequila but I've seen people manage 20 shots and walk up a flight of stairs with little difficulty. So, how many tequila shots would you recommend to stop at? (lets say in a good 3hours)

Can't recommend a specific number because everyone is different. But unless you know how much you can consume -- why not be safe and stop at 1 or 2.

I've done almost 20 shots of vodka and survived - But I don't advise it.

It really depends on the person and how he can handle alcohol. Besides, I think it's most fun if you can actually remember things and have some minimun control of what you are doing.
I recommend you two to five shots for a fun night. And no shots at all if you are planning to drive.

i'm rather big and i don't even start to feel the effects of the alcohol until 7 or 8 shots. i've managed to down 16 shots in a couple of hours - i was drunk, but still able to walk home.

It depends on how much you drink regularly because you are going to have a tolerance.
For me, In 3 hours, I'd have about 4 shots, but I weigh about 105 pounds. I'd have a happy buzz.
Be sure to drink lots of water so you don't get a hangover.
