I go through depression a few times a year as well. I can be just fine for a couple of months then it just hits me. No one that i am close to understands me. It is really difficult to deal with at times. I know what you are going through. Whenever i go online looking for someone to talk to they end up being complete creeps and they dont understand that i am not looking to be taken advantage of. i am happily married. I j ust need a friend to listen to me sometimes and feel open to talk to me as well. You can email me if you would like. sea_sher@yahoo.com

Have you looked at Manic Depression or bipolar illness? When you seem to have a pattern or cycle it is possible to have this illness. Or Unipolar if it's just depression but still cyclical. It would be good to 'chart' or keep a calendar of your bad times to see if there is a cycle or recurrent time pattern to it. Or if it's depression mainly, as both the spring and fall seem to make depressions worse, so there is a seasonal pattern. These are chemical changes in your brain and body, so although a friend and support is good, medicine is also necessary. Have you heard of the SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder)? There is a special light that can help, and you just need to be 20 minutes a day in it's light reading or whatever, as it is closer to the natural light of the sun. You don't look at the light, just be in it's presence. Because of a 10 year history, I think it just gets worse as we age, and become more aware. But it would be good to see if there are any toxins you are being exposed to, as we only slowly learn about the bad side effects. It is complex in any case.

I do the same thing - I get stressed out and overwhelmed, and I just freak out completely and stop functioning 2-3 times a year. It usually doesn't take very long for me to snap out of it, but until I do, I am entirely useless as a human being. Usually, sleep is the best way for me to get over this, but sometiems that doesn't work. I have often wondered if it was a hormonal thing.

I have struggled with it since I was 25. Some days are worse and other days are better. It all depends what kind of medication and therapy that helps you the best.

I have experienced depression and panic cycles most of my adult life (I am 58).
You can find a lot of good support and understanding on the depression forum at About.com.
