I'm a diver and in diving, it's a very mental sport because you need to be intense if you want to suceed and all. My mom is SOOO damn controlling about me and diving. I had my shoulder popping in and out of it's socket one night and I toughed it out and finished practice and I told her afterwards and she was like, "Whatever. Get your bag and lets go. You wasted a practice." Even in High School season and summer season, she's always like, you have to be the best! All year round practices, which tend to be more competitive and intense, she's always telling me not to waste her time and money by not working as hard as possible at practice. I love diving, but she's making me hate it because it's no longer fun. Seems like if i'm not the best, I'm not her daughter. She's not happy if I'm not diving and I can't ever just dive because I like it, i have to dive because she wants me to.I've told her to not be so anal about it before, but she doesn't stop! How do I tell her to lighten up?

I would try to let her know that it's ONLY a sport, and she's ruining your love for it. Let her know that if she continues, then you dont wish to participate. If she's unable to accept that. Or you dont really mean it. Then you need a 3rd party to assist you.
And the only ones I can think of would be:
Your dad? Your counselor? Your coach?
I wish you the very best. It cant be fun, if you cant enjoy!

My Dad was like this with my swimming. Ask to talk with her alone, then tell her how you feel. There's no need to sugar coat something like this, otherwise she may not take you as sincere. Threaten to quit if she doesn't chill out. If that doesn't work try tuning out what she says, or talk to your dad about it first. Sometimes parents have a way of listening to eachother better than their children.
