I'm from the US, and I know that most men I know would prefer to take care of the bills, they sometimes feel bad or incompetent if they do not, but when you are young and both struggling, it is good to both split the bills. Younger men are just fine with that generally.

In the US, if the bills are paid by a man, the family goes broke! We all know that women are far more detail-oriented and meticulous than men are.
Men are sloppy about money and would rather go and buy some new tool or toy than make sure there is enough money in the bank.
Of course, over there, the women can't see through the burka well enough to even see the amount due, so it is a moot point, really.
Eastern "traditions" are so, like, 5th century, don't you think?

In many marriages (USA) both man and wife work. Money is banked jointly and the family decides on who pays the bills. There is no shame in this as the economy is capitalistic and their is freedom of opportunity for married couples, single men and single women.
On occasion in certain social situations it is acceptable for the girl to ask out the boy and pay for the date. This is somewhat rare but there are many women that are career women that are quite financially successful and they many times share expenses equally with their husband and/or boyfriends.
Over the past 50 years our country has changed from the practice of the man being totally responsibles for the finances of the family and/or courtship to the practices of today. Our society has changed as prices have gone up (as they have everywhere) and the cost of raising a family has gone up, we gradually progressed to many families needing 2 income earners.
The downfall of many American families has been the easy access to credit debt. Many families operate on a "buy now, pay later" philosophy using loans and credit cards. This has not been good for the society and this is another reason for both the man and woman work to support the family. In many other cultures, of course, debt is unacceptable. I know from personal experience that life is much easier without debt.
I apologize for going on and on but I thought a somewhat more definitive answer was in order.

More or less the same in Singapore for chinese couples.
But I think the "going dutch" idea is catching up and the boys are not so embarassed now. I used to pass the money to my boyfriend under the table for him to pay the bill, so as not to embarrass him.
But now.. we use the credit card...no more problem about who's paying now...

Here in the US its a joint effort. Both of us work, and put our cash on the table and it gets split up into the bills. I have a friend (a guy) who actually stays home and watches the kids, while his wife goes out and works. It really is acceptable however here.

Bills can be paid by the women and no one is going to think anything about it here (United States). I have went on several dates where we went dutch (I pay for my part and he pays for his). As long as it is paid, no one cares where the money is coming from.

In the US, men and women are considered equal....Together, it's a partnership. Equal responsibility, thus it doesnt matter who chooses to pay which bills.
