I guess it would help if I knew what breed of dog or hair type. Certainly a tearless dog shampoo is always right. No people products, pH is all wrong for dog skin.

If I have a large breed, outside dog that doesn't get bathed very frequently, I will use a deep cleaning, citrus based shampoo. If I have an allergic dog that comes every week, I will use a hypo-allergic shampoo. If I have a dog that is covered in fleas, I use a flea shampoo. White dog with staining, a whitening shampoo. Dry skin, a super conditioning shampoo. Ringworm/staph infections; a 2-4% chlorohexdine shampoo. Fungal infections; miconzole nitrate shampoo.

It really depends on the dog, skin and coat condition. Using the right products makes all the difference. Always follow any shampoo with a coat/skin conditioner. Again choose the conditioner based on dog.

ps - all shampoos are water based

Either baby shampoo or preferably one made for dogs, but either way be sure to rinse very well, and use the most minimal amount of shampoo possible.

On my past two dogs and the cocker spaniel I have now, I have always used/use Johnson and Johnson's tear free baby shampoo. It's a very gentle shampoo that smells good and if it gets in the dog's eyes, it won't sting or hurt them.

Bioguard Shampoo by Farnam

A gentle, water-based formula lathers up quickly, rinses out easily, yet won't wash out the protection of your pet's flea and tick control. It cleans and conditions the coat and leaves a fresh scent.

This is a good one. Won't wash away Frontline or other treatments, and it's gentle.
