I was in the Air Force, 2 of my sisters were in the Air Force, my niece is now serving in the Air Force. So I can speak girl experience. After you finish basic training, you will either go to your next duty station for OJT, or on to Tech School (I did). When you get to your permanent station, you will get up, go to work, come home just like in civilian life, only you are limited on your choice of wardrobe. My job was technical, so I worked rotating shifts and many times long hours. My sisters had supply type jobs and they worked Mon-Fri and enjoyed all the holidays that government employees do. Even though they had more fun in the service, my pay back was the money I was able to make right out of the service. I would have stayed in, but I was locked into the Pacific theater and wanted Europe, and the money on the outside was way too good to pass up. Overseas was so much more fun than being stateside. You'll enjoy it, always hang around with positive people who enjoy it too, and you have memories to last you 3 life times. Best of luck to you.

Your size is not an issue. Take a look at the AF physical training standards, they're not hard but you'd have to meet them by the end of basic training.

As for what its like, that depends on your job. Most AF jobs are mostly indoors, 8-5, 7 days a week type affairs. There are variations though.

As far as compensation after completeing service, if you complete your initial contract (say 4-6 yrs) you'll qualify for education benefits (usually GI bill, etc), and there is preference for veterans for gov't jobs.

But if you do 20 yrs you get a pension that's 50% of final base pay rate. So if you retired at pay grade E-7 today you could expect a retirement check of $1500 a month for the rest of your life. If you stay in for 30 years that goes up to 75% of your final pay, so if you retired at 30 yrs and pay grade E-8, you'd get more like $2000 a month. Plus if you do at least 20 yrs you get permanent health care as a retiree.
