Well, NYC is closer than the other cities.
You could go see a show being taped- probably the only ones that would be appropriate for an 11 year-old would be the Martha Stewart show and Emeril Live. http://gonyc.about.com/od/tvtapings/
you could get a city pass:
$54 for a 1-day New York Pass includes:
•Admission to over 40 top attractions in New York City, including: Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, American Museum of Natural History, The Guggenheim, Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum, Intrepid Sea.Air.Space Museum, Brooklyn Museum of Art, NBC Studio Tour, Circleline Sightseeing, Radio City Music Hall Stage Door Tour, The United Nations Tour, Madison Square Garden All Access Tour, and much much more!
• 140-page comprehensive guide book
• Discounts at 25 top restaurants and retailers
• Line-skipping privileges at select attractions
all for one price!

New York would probably be cheaper depending on what part of Canada you were coming from, and as far as fun things to do together, Central Park has all sorts of things to do, like petting zoo's,carnival type rides, clowns, mimes and magicians, artist that draw your caricatures, or landscapes just to name a few, and then there are the tours like the haunted New York tour that takes you to the most haunted places in N.Y.C! or even a ferry ride that comes with lunch/dinner depending on time of day you take the tour.

Rome is by far the cheapest! NYC is the most expensive.
There are hundreds of shows in NYC that you can go see, you will have to buy tickets in advance or stand in LONG lines. There's also the Metropolitan Museum.

There is Alot to do in NYC. we took the kids last year and it was alot of fun. We took a tour bus around the city to see as much as we could. Saw the statue of liberty, went to ground zero, the empire state building, went to central park. there is also a huge museum close to central park that was alot of fune. we spent a whole day there.
