Yes.

Many fruit will ripen in a paper bag. They will ripen even FASTER if you place a ripe banana or a ripe apple in the bag and close it.

Why does this work?
Fruits ripen because they receive a signal that tells them to begin producing certain enzymes that break down the components of the fruit to be more tasty for animals. (for the purpose of seed dispersion)
This signal is provided by the release of ethylene gas. Ripe fruits produce ethylene, and a ripe banana produces one of the largest amounts of ethylene among fruits. This is why when you place a ripe banana in a bag with another fruit, the unripened fruit will ripen very quickly.

This is also the way producers get tomatoes, and many other fruit, to the stores. You see, once tomatoes are ripe they do not last very long and will not be able to last the trip to the supermarket form the farm. They are also softer, thus are damaged more easily. Thus, farmers pick the tomatoes while they are still green. Then these tomatoes are exposed to ethylene gas in the distribution facilities closer to the supermarkets! This is why vine ripened tomatoes taste much better!

That varies from fruit to fruit. Some will ripen on a window sill, others in a paper bag. Ask the produce person at your grocery store.

Fruits that are ripening give off a 'gas', so if you put them in a paper bag and close it, they are more likely to ripen faster. If you leave them OUT of the refrigerator they will ripen faster than if you refrigerate them.

Some fruit can be wrapped in paper (like newspaper). I know its work good with bananas, avocado, mango....
Those fruits produce ethylene gas- this gas enhances ripening, and when you close the fruit in paper the gas won't spread in the air.
