I'm sure there are some French who will curse the fact that another American has won the Tour. However, a Frenchman hasn't won the Tour since 1985 (Bernard Hinault), and we Americans cannot be faulted for their failure to win the world's most prestigious cycling race--in their country. Since Hinault won the Tour in 1985, an American has won the race an amazing 11 times! A Spaniard (Miguel Indurain x5 and Pedro Delgado) has won it six times; a German (Jan Ullrich) once; an Italian (Marco Pantani) once; a Dane (Bjarne Riis) once; and an Irishman (Stephen Roche) once. Should not the French reserve some contempt for these other countries given their possible upset with the Americans recent dominance of the race?
Re Lance Armstrong's use of EPO: I will grant there is reason to suspect that he used the substance prior to the 1999 Tour, perhaps even in 2000, but testing for EPO began in earnest during the 2000 Sydney Olympics and was in place by the 2001 Tour. Lance has continued to deny use of EPO and the extensive tests done on him in recent years would seem to give sufficient credence to his statements.
Lance is and was not the greatest cyclist of all time. That honor must go to a Belgian, Eddy Merckx. But Lance should be celebrated as the most dominant rider to win the Tour in at least the last two decades.
I am thankful for France's contributions to the birth of this country. I think the French should be grateful for America's significant role in liberating them from the tyranny of Nazi Germany. I admit to some jingoism when it comes to my country and I believe that many French are no different. France is no longer the dominant player in world affairs it once was. However, the influence of the United States grew enormously in the 20th Century. For whatever reason the French seem to resent this and have worked to undercut our reach wherever and whenever possible in recent years. This is truly lamentable, because we probably have more in common than we might believe and a shared history that we should appreciate.

First I think they are laughing all the way to the bank. Millions watch the Tour each day, quite a few of them...in person by the route in France. It's a tremendous boon for tourism.
Also it's an international sport you blithering cycle imbicile: Rassmussun won the King of the Mountains, Thor a Norwegian won the Sprinters Jersey, 2nd and 3rd on the tour (not bad considering only the best of the best of the best get invited) are European.
Yes, it's 7 yellow jersys in a row to USA but we are still newbies in the sport and have a ways to go.
Now shut up and get out and ride.

Lance won the Tour because he took a lot of EPO (undectable to drug tests by the way). I am so glad the sport is finished with him, my only problem is I wish he would've been busted before retitring. ONly a naive Lance fan (not a cycling fan) thinks Lance was ever a clean athlete.

It's easy for american's to win the Tour De France because they all come over JUICED TO THE MAX! with their designer drugs that can not be detected with conventional testing methods. Don't brag about a sport that you have to cheat at *cough cough* Lance

lance is a sensational athlete! The only reason he took EPO was because he was going thru chemo. and Epo keeps the red blood cell count high enough so he doesn't have to stop chemo due to anemia thus risking the malignant tumor from metastasizing and killing him. Anyone who puts him down is just a hater and doesn't understand the pharmacokinetics of Epogen.

Ha ha...it must piss the French off. Off course you''ll see the same doping slander without a shred of evidence. However, as a Mennonite Landis makes an unlikely drug user.
