Have you ever played Dungeons and Dragons?
Do you think it's "evil?"
Check out this comic by Jack Chick:

Is this what Christians really believe happens when you play Dungeons and Dragons?
Obveously, I think the comic is rediculous. D&D is just a game, and has little to no connection to anything occult anyway (not that the occult is evil, you know). I haven't played yet, but my boyfriend is a Dungeon master and he's going to help me start. :)

Poncho Rio, you didn't answer my question. You just told me why you didn't like D&D, not why it is supposidly damaging to your soul.

No way. I played D&D back in the day (early 80's). It is not evil, you cannot acctually cast spells and it did not make me believe I was one of my many characters. It was a fun, intelligent, imaginative game. I still have my old books, before TSR went crazy. I played the original form of AD&D (advanced dungeon and dragons). I was even a darn good dungeon master and could draw up my own adventures for my group. I was president of the Adventurer's Guild in my High School. The reason the religious community say it is evil is because it takes the mythologies of many cultures and make them playable. Up to and including all of the incarnations of the Devil, Asmodeus, Baal, Beelzebub, Anthraxus, et. They failed to see all the incarnations of angels as well.
It is just a game that parents and religious leaders are afraid to try because they may like it. I played until I was in my mid 20's. I only stopped because I moved and noone in my area still played, (pity).

I just started playing D&D myself and I don't think it's evil at all. I am a christian and I don't have a problem with. My mom thought it was a little weird at first when I bought it, but now it's fine and I've even played it w/ my dad. I think the reason everyone thought it was evil was because it does involve magic (but it's not like it's real in the least bit) and that always bothers people and, the only way most people have heard about it is through the media where they show a group of super obsessed people in costumes who take it a little TOO far. The truth is, it's more apropriate than most video games and there is only a very small number of people who really get obsessed with it. In my opinion it's a great game that causes you to think and have fun at the same time.

Oh come on. D&D is not evil. We played AD&D alot (a long, long time ago when we had the time and the inclination). My friends even made a record attempt and played for 60 hours straight. We are all perfectly normal (using the term very loosely - we weren't really normal to start off with). None of us are prancing around the garden naked at midnight (except in the company of other consenting adults) or eating babies. Satan does not talk to me. I have not beem warped in any way. I am not addicted to drugs. I have a job. The only risk (if you listen to my ex bad boy husband) is that maybe I'm just a little bit geeky.

Gosh - I have played & written for D&D and loads of other RPGs since 1977 & no they are not evil.
Basically its a form of freedom of expression & the thought that people (especially younger players) are free thinking scares a lot of people including the churches.
There was one (in)famous instance of a young man getting too into AD&D and going over the edge and committing suicide in the 70s (It was written up in a book called `The Dungeonmaster`) and several other deaths & attacks have been vaguely linked to the hobby usually by the media. Basically they have all been blown out of proportion - ITS A GAME !
Go out there and start playing - its a whole lot of fun.

It's a mental game. Played on a table with pen, paper, dice, and one heck of an imagination.
I've played it, I enjoy it.
The reason that it is vilified are as follows:
1. It uses dice [to gamble is to tempt God]
2. It has detailed descriptions of EVIL things Devils, Demons, and Vile creatures.
3. The politics of the time and the better than thou of some make it a Sweet target
On point one you're not gambling the other points don't count!
That said,
1 keep it on the table
2 don't let it go to your head (get wrapped up in it)
3 don't make it real
4 DON'T MAKE IT REAL
Now that said
Enjoy

Actually the only video game I consider evil would be one like Grand Theft Auto. My sons do not play Dungeons and Dragons by their choice. They do like Rune scape and some others. I believe it should be an individual choice based on a child's age and ability to distinguish fantasy from reality.

Why do people think it's evil?
Because it has poison, assassins, violence, demons, devils, necromancy, raising the dead, and things like that in it.
Because game companies make books like "The Book of Erotic Fantasy".
Because a "perfect" character score is 18 (6,6,6)
That's a good start.
Is it evil? Um, no.
Not any more than Stephen King writing about monsters makes him a monster, or watching a Movie with serial killers makes you a serial killer. Perfectly safe, just play with good people.
The only "evil" to D&D is you can waste time & money on stuff you should spend on something productive or useful. And that's a big enough evil for most. I mean, I "play" D&D. Some people devote their entire lives to it. yikes.
Then again, there's some of the players:

Aaaaah how cute!! the comic strip that is! tee hee
Well it really depends on your beliefs - given that christians believe that there is such a thing as the devil then they have a desire to rid themselves of it.
Spiritualy speaking everything is made up of creation so everything is god and just IS. It isnt bad or good, it just IS
If you personally feel comfortable with it then enjoy it - the aim of life is to remain in peace and harmony with life - not to create or inflict pain or harm on another person or to effect their free will. If you can do this whilst playing a game that is not adversly effecting your own mind, then i dont see where the harm is. Just one point make sure it does not adversly effect you!

I don't think it is evil. I have heard many stories about it being evil and that people who do it worship satan. That from what I have seen is false. My kids play and they do not worship satan. It's a game. Quite a few years ago Tom Hanks made a movie I think it's called Mazes and Monsters. It's based on the game. Kind of interesting. You should check it out.
I hope that I helped you.

Yes it is extremely evil and chaotic game. The rules are quite vague and ambiguous not to mention they are completely inept and incomplete. They may as well not have any rules at all as 99% of it is made up while you play. I think the object of the game is to figure out what mood the dungeon master is in that night. The game has absolutely nothing to do with rolling the dice or figuring out good solutions. It is about figuring out what the dungeon master is thinking. Should I jump on that rock or should I jump in the water? Hmm. Is the dungeon master going to kill me if I jump on the rock or into the water. Well, I have 50/50 chance. Oh, I'm sorry you picked the wrong answer. Didn't you listen to that elf 5 months ago when he told you to look to the sun for the answer?
DnD is stupid.
