Antibiotics will cure your infection. Be sure to take them as directed and take all the medicine even if you are feeling well before it's gone. Not finishing your antibiotic can cause germs to become resistant to medications if even only one survives it's new offspring when it repliactes will be resistant to the antibiotic you were taking.

Antibiotics will not cure the problem, they will only serve as a band-aid.
There are two main type of infections involving your teeth. One is an abscessed tooth, the other being periodontal disease.
An abscessed tooth is when there is an infection involving the nerve of the tooth. The tooth must either be treated with a root canal therapy or be extracted. Antibiotics will most likely be given to help until the treatment can be done. Pain killers may also be given to help with discomfort.
The other infection is periodontal disease, which is an infection of the gums and bone surrounding the teeth. This is much more involved and not as easily 'fixed'. Periodontal disease can never be cured but it can be managed, just like high blood pressure and diabetes. You will need periodontal treatment that may include 'root planing', this sounds horrible but all it involves is either a hygienist or a periodontist cleaning off the tartar and bacteria under the gums. The bacteria is the problem and needs to be removed and maintained at the lowest level possible.
You need to see a dentist and see what your issue is and what it will take to treat it. But regardless, you need to treat it. This is a good scenario of how infections in your mouth can hurt your whole body.
When your body has to constantly fight an infection, it lowers its ability to fight other problems (even a simple cold). Oh and smoking does not help. It would be a great time to quit. Smoking lowers the ability for your body to fight infection, that is why smokers seems to have colds linger for a long time. I have had patients that have continued smoking after perio treatment and there are results but there will never be as good as the non smokers. If you smoke a lot then, of course, it will be worse than if you smoke once in awhile. There was even a study that showed smokers are much more likely to need root canals than non smokers.
Good Luck!

First of all do as the doctor said about taking your antibiotics. An infection in the mouth is nothing to play with. Smoking will delay the healing process in your mouth yes. All of the additives in cig. smoke keeps your oral tissues and body from getting the O2 that it needs, because you are not getting the O2 the body needs, this can impede the bodies healing process. You should quit smoking anyway, but esp. because you have an active infection going on in your body. Make sure that you see a dentist ASAP to figure out what is going on, get the tooth fixed to cure the infection, and good luck with quitting smoking. Most people say not to go cold turkey, but each person is different. There is a antidepressant called Zyban generic name wellbutrin, which can help cut down on the cravings. The doctor will have you start taking the medicine first, then about four to six weeks later once it is in your system well, the doctor will have you set a quit date. The medication in combination with the patch has been successful for many of my patients. If you try to quit and don't succeed, try again. Don't be discouraged, even cutting back can help. My good friend was a smoker, she smoked in her car, but never in her house. So slowly she cut back on the places she allowed herself to smoke, she quit smoking in the car, then quit smoking in the garage, and then finally she quit altogether. You will just have to find the combination of things that will work for you. The main thing is you have to want to quit, if you don't do it for yourself, then you will not be successful. Be sure you are quitting for the right reasons. I wish you the best of luck. And be sure to get that tooth checked out.

Results from tooth paste are totally insignificant the best way to whiten your teeth is by using Carbamide Peroxide, this is what dentists actually use and charge £300 per treatment.
We sell this for home use for around £20 and we also sell Laser kits. If you would like to know more please e mail me. or visit www.toothwhitening4all.com
Laser kits produce immediate results and they are inexpensive.
Even if you have not taken care of your teeth you will get amazing results. Just be carefull when parting money with a dentist, its cheaper to do your own at home we supply dentists with the same gels.
