As much as I would like to recommend going with a pound kitty, it could be a bit hit or miss in terms of temperament. I have heard that Maine Coons and Siamese are both very people and family friendly. I personally have two Bengal cats and they are both very affectionate and people oriented. And also super-smart, the boy plays fetch with a ball and even knows how to open up doors (jumps up and pulls handle down). Overall, if you really want a certain temperament, I would choose a male from one of the more sociable breeds. And then make sure your kids socialize with the cat properly, i.e. don't let them get too rough or the cat will retaliate.

you can do two things:
one- if you want a pure breed cat get a book about cat breeds and read about the cats in there search for the characteristic your looking for(personality, size, hair length stuff like that). once you've chosen the breed that fits your life style, contact a registered breeder. make sure the cat your getting has certifications and a list of his blood line.
just know that cats are like humans even if the book says that a certain breed personality is much friendly could be the cat you'll take will not turn out to be this way.
also pure breeds cats cost alot of money.
two- if certifications and blood line isn't important to you visit the local animal shelter they will have lots of cats you can chose from in all kind of sizes colors and hair length.
last advice: if you wanna be sure of the cat personality get a grown up cat which personality is already known.

Dragon Lady is right. Ragdolls are a "Manmade" breed wherein they bred out all the aggression of typical cats (cats are one of nature's best hunters). They are incredibly docile to the point where they will allow children and adults alike to tote them around "like a ragdoll", meaning you can flop them on your back or hold them in your arms like a baby and they will put up with far more than most animals would without a protest. They love to be in laps and babied, but some might consider them a bit needy. I've heard wonderful things about them...they are quite intelligent from all reports, too. Hope this helps.

Get a loving kitty one where when you hold it for the first time is purrs and wants you to pet it. Go to your nearest animal shelter and pick one out there hold it play with it just make sure that it doesn't growl or hiss at you!
You must remember though a kitty is a kitty it will have small kitty size claws, teeth, and all cats like to stalk and jump, climb etc... My neighbor got a kitten and gave it away because it jumped on a sleeping child and scratched him but the kitty did nothing wrong! When getting a kitty you must realize that it will need things such as litter pan with litter in it, something to scratch on, food, attention, and lots of love. Time to learn where to scratch and not to scratch, what not to climb up (like your leg) and what is okay to climb on.
If you get a kitten instead of a cat you can teach it to all kinds of things and play with it. Older cats are set in their ways.
If you get a shelter kitty and spend the money you have to pay for buying a pure breed you can buy it kitty toys and furniture!!
Most pure bred kittens will cost you from $250 to $600 if not more just for the kitten!

As others have said, just go to your local shelter. All the animals there deserve a loving home. The staff at the shelter can help you choose the perfect cat.

Try a Ragdoll. My aunt's was the sweetest ever and so gulible. It was hilarious playin' pranks on it. Although she did climb up my aunt's christmas tree and cause it to fall. Oh well.
