I would like to buy a gun, never bought one before, I have two pistols, a 44 magnum and a 9mm (my dad gave be those). But now I can't decide between a 12 guage shotgun, I was thinking of the Remington 870 Express Magnum which I found in a gun store, used but looked in good condition for $300.00 (Is that a good price for one of those?) I would like to use this gun for hunting, bird, turkey, maybe even deer. Whats your guys thoughts on the 870? Is there any other 12 guage shotguns or rifles out there that are worth taking a look at?

The Remington 870 has been in continuous production for around 50 years. If something lasts that long being newly made, then it must be good. The 870 in 12 gauge is probably one of the most versatile weapons you could choose.

Different chokes will satisfy your need for different game and many deer have fallen to the 12 gauge 00buck load. Should the 870 ever break, new parts are just a phone call away.

If you wanted a autoloader, the Bennelli and the Beretta are good choices, but they will run you around $800 new. Don't know how parts are for these. One Italian auto pistol that I had took almost a year to get a new disconnector from the manufacturer.

I have a Remington 870 Express Magnum and it has been an excellent gun. I have had the gun for approx. 9 years, using it for skeet shooting, turkey hunting, squirrel, rabbit, etc. It has been extremely dependable. I harvested two very nice gobblers with it just this spring. I don't know what guns sell for in your area, but I live in KY, and I believe $300.00 may be a little steep for a used shotgun. Mossberg also makes a fine firearm at affordable prices, but I would take the 870 over a mossberg any day, even if I had to pay a little more for it.

The 870 is one of the all time favorite pump shotguns in the country. I have used mine for skeet, Turkey, duck and deer here in Florida. Can't beat the quality for the price. Yeah, $300 is ok if it's in good shape. The 870 is an all around great shotgun that is hard to beat, and easily modified if you want to go that route. You may also want to check out the Mossberg 500 pumpgun. Another goodie.

As a female gunsmith I also think the 870 is the strongest pump shotgun on the market. Next would be Mossberg. They are a little cheaper. Our Sheriffs dept. uses them and they hold up very well, even the range guns that get shot all the time. If you go Mossberg get the 590 series.

The 870 platform is perhaps one of the most reliable and versatile of all pump action shotguns. Another great thing about the 870 is that due to it's ubiquitous nature, there are TONS of aftermarket bells and whistles readily available for it. Happy hunting.

Have you looked at new ones at wal-mart? I know in Alaska they have the best deals outta all the gun shops here. You can actually get a new one here for the price of a used one at a gun shop... Before you commit to the 870 go check out other ones .. for me a gun has to 'feel right'

i would recommend a Saiga shotgun. you can get them in 12, 20, or 410 ga. they are very reliable semi-auto shotguns, based on the Kalashnikov design, and are some of the fastest to cycle. they are under $400, witch makes them some of the least expensive semi-auto's. i have 3 of them (2 20's and a 12) and they are my first choice of shotgun.
