Flies are attracted to decaying matter. This is because it is easier to digest for the flies and also tends to be soft. Since it is soft, it is easier to lay eggs and gives the maggots a nice place to grow. Flies also do not have teeth, so the more pre-digested something is, the better.

Because it gives off a bit of heat and so it's a really nice snuggly place to lay maggots, plus they'll have a food source as soon as they're born! Urgh.
