Ok...this has worked for me several times in the last few years. Ask both of them if they have bridal registries at any stores. If they do, you can get online and see what they want. When you make your decision from their list, you go to the store and get it. It's easy and simple. If they don't have a registiry at a store, go to one of their best friends and see what the bride and groom need or wants. It's important to know what they need or want, this way you can kill two birds with one stone.

I would do cash for the 20 year old. I always give what I guesstimate the cost per person at the reception to be. (In other words, if it's in their backyard, $50 is fine, if it's at a nice swanky place, minimum $100.) I also factor in how close I am to the couple.
As for the 40 something. Some couples register at travel agenciess. Donate to that. Otherwise, a gift card to a home store (Linens & Things, Lowes', etc.) would work. They probably have most everything they need.

When I got married, the gifts that we liked absolutely the best were checks or cash. Not so cute or romantic, but, boy, did we need it. Most newlyweds have no idea how much it costs to set up housekeeping for the first time. I might consider money for the younger ones and a registry gift for the other.

If either of them has a registry, check it out and pick something. If they don't, talk with them and find out what they need or would like. Don't be afraid to ask for several ideas from them. If that leads you to a dead end, you could always just give them some money or a gift certificate to a nice restaurant or their favorite shopping spot. But try to find out from the bride and/or groom first. Good luck!

Are they registered anywhere? Get some small things off their registries. Or just give them both checks for $50. Money is always good.

Although etiquette says you can't state your preference, check/cash in a card is the most appreciated.
