Why does a Dog eat sand?

The dog probably needs to be vaccinated if he hasnt so far. I think usually they do that when they have stomach problems. Dog needs to have medication

I think dogs eat sand to get more water/moisture.

I have two dogs, Lab and bulldog. Since it's gotten hot - both dogs have been eating sand - especially when the water is low. I have increased their amount of water. They are still eating sand, but MUCH MUCH less.

I have also started watering their shade spots in the morning before work so they won't have to create such big holes to get to the cooler damp soil.

Where? In the beach, desert or at river bank? It is because some kinds of sand have salty taste. So the dog conveys to human add some salt in my daily food! I don't know how to find salt to taste as said in the recepie books! I have seen dogs eating one specific type of green grass.

maybe the smell of sand lures it to eat it. Sometimes dogs eat odd things because they might be missing something in their diet. If there was sea gull poop on the sand, maybe that was the dog was trying to eat. My dog tried to eat geese poop, when he thought I wasnt looking.

I asked my doctor when my puppy ate dirt if she was missing something in her diet. He asked if I fed her a good commercial grade dog food. I do. So he said, She is just stupid! Not to worry. She stopped on her own.

my dog did the same thing first he would dig then eat but nothing ever happened and he still does it so i think u are okay

Check with your vet; that can't be good. Likely means it's lacking something in it's diet.
