It is still used as a form of social control. Karl Marx had a theory called "conflict theory". It stated that the smaller groups within a society constantly battle for resources. The ruling class, that is the group that currently has control, institutes norms and religious dogma in order to maintain control. I also think that religion still keeps people from thinking for themselves and becoming individuals as Nietzsche suggested.

All of this only applies to Western religion, however, because some Eastern religions, such as Daoism and Buddhism, encourage individuality and self improvement.

It hasn't run it's course yet. If it had it wouldn't still be such a huge force in controlling society today.
It will eventually evolve...it is just slower than the rest of society.
Religion has been around for as long as societies have existed. In many different forms. For better or worse it's not going anywhere anytime soon at least I do not expect it to fade out in my life time.

Yes. Religious tenets were written thousands of years ago but superstitious relatively illiterate men. With today's science and otherwise educated world, the errors are showing up and diminishing the control held by religions. Now we need good spiritualists and philosophers to show the proper direction for mankind. Religion can no longer do it, and I'm glad of it.

Christianity has not run it's course. And it will not be over on hearth until Jesus has the last word and removes all sin from this world after HE takes us Chrsitians home with him.
And even after that, His word shall stand forever!!
