Girl, I feel your pain! This summer I've been taking care of my neice and two nephews. One of those nephews is my youngest sister's son (age 1 1/2) and the other two kids (10 and 6) are my oldest sister's. I love them and all, but I'm so ready to let them go for the summer. The problem I have is with my oldest sister and her husband. I've always watched their kids off and on throughout the years while they go party for no pay because I love hanging out with them. Now this summer, I'm taking care of them all day from 8 to 6. At first, I was going to stay at their house during the week because it would be best considering our transportation issues and we agreed that the pay would be $300 a month. Yeah, I know that's a steel right there! But I decided during that first week that I needed to be back home and they'd bring the kids to me. We never talked about decreasing that pay, but last week my brother-in-law, who goes out with his friends (without my sister) an average of 2-3 times a week playing poker and stuff, gave me $100. That means that now my pay is now $200 a week because I'm no longer staying with them making sure their house is clean and having dinner on the table when they get home. I can go on and on, but the point is that I'm doing the real favor for them. I was going to save all this money for my study abroad trip to England, but I was able so secure enough money so I really don't need this crappy paying job anyway. If they have enough money to party all week, then they certainly have enough to pay me a decent wage. Thank God I only have three more weeks of this. Now the same goes for you. If you feel there's a problem then there is. Ask your nephew's and cousin's parents for compensation. It doesn't matter how old you are- everyone who works deserves decent pay. And if they feel they don't have enough money to pay someone else to raise their kids, then they don't have enough to go party either. And if needed, just break them off. It won't be disloyal or anything like that because if anyone's being disloyal it's the kids' parents. Do something before you all get used to it.

I think babysitting for family doesn't really need pay. I mean, you're just staying around with your relatives. And you can have fun whenever you want, unlike many of the more professional contracts with non-family members. I mean, think about it: did your mom and dad ask for salary when they babysat you? Okay, maybe that was a bad example, but family is family, and I don't think it should be a chore to look out for them. Don't be like that guy in the Godfather who betrayed his family and got killed.
Also, if they see that you're acting greedily, then maybe they won't even ask you next time. That will be a big insult, so just be cool with family. Unless of course you hate your family, in which case I pity you; if this is the case, though, I guess you can ask for money. But then, you'll be like a mercenary with no loyalty or allegiances.

You need to speak up and tell them that you charge for babysitting and if they still won't pay up, then next time they ask, tell them no. (If your mom or someone is setting it up, then sit down and talk to them and explain the situation.) If this still doesn't help, you might want to think about getting a job somewhere. You're guaranteed to be paid there, plus it will take up a lot of your time you may otherwise get roped into babysitting.

I say that unless they are your sisters and brothers, you should be paid! I had three siblings and anybody else I watched, I was paid for babysitting! You go girl! Stand up for your rights, and to heck with that "helping out a family member" bullcrap! They'll just keep using you, no matter what!

Who hates shopping for groceries and cooking for kids without pay? Who hates doing laundry for ungrateful children without pay? Who hates taking care of sick babies all night without sleep and then going to work the next day without pay? Who hates taking kids to the park, library, shopping, haircuts, Mc Donalds, movies etc... without pay?

You should get paid sometimes because you have a life too.

consider it "rent" for the free room, clothes, food and transportation you get.
