My friend is going through this at the moment. He is choosing between Nikon D200 and EOS 30D. I own a 20D and its great it is pretty much the same as a 30D in terms of fetures and I believe the picture is from the same chip/sensor. If you find the 30D is too expensive try to get your hands on a 20D, they have dropped so much now the 30D is out. If you want to spend the money have a look also at the Nikon D200. If you want to shoot in low light, Canon is the better choice. Othewise go the nikon D200

"Worth" is your own value. If you are really up to the level of the Canon EOS line and you love photography, it's worth it to have equipment that won't hold you back.
I own several Nikon products, including the D200, D70s, D50 and a few point-and-shoots. The "lowly" D50 (my wife's camera of choice) is wonderful compared to the best of my point-and-shoots and worth every penny it cost. The D200 is 10 times as good as the D50, but if you are not at least an "advanced amateur," you will not come close to using everything that is available on the D200. In fact, you might have trouble learning how to use it.
I am thrilled with the whole Nikon line, but Canon is excellent also. If you want to get into "serious stuff," I'd chose from one of those two brands. They have more lenses than you could ever use, if you decide to expand your horizons. I am not familiar with the specifics of the EOS 30D, but put it side by side with the D70s and check feature by feature. It costs quite a bit less and it's still a wonderful camera.

It's worth every penny if you need the features. It's a terrific camera and great value for money.
If you can do without some of the features - and if you can also settle for a cheaper build quality, consider the Canon Rebel XT (a.k.a. 350D). Or, if you don't have Canon lenses, consider the less expensive models by Nikon: the D70s and the D50.
This link shows you a side by side comparison of the specs: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_eos30d%2Ccanon_eos350d%2Cnikon_d70s%2Cnikon_d50&show=all
You can also use that website for in-depth reviews (for a full review of the Nikon D70s, see the D70).
Alternatively, if you have the budget, but can't justify the price of a 30D, why not get a 350D and spend the balance on glass?

buy it if you find you are unable to use a point & shoot to take photos and are willing to learn many new things
shooting concerts
wanting really big prints
birds
fast pace sports(indoors expecialy)
wanting to look all pro
or just a hobby thats fun
those are reasons to spend the money and a few more that i didnt list...
the only bad thing is that its not portable and its expensive
other then that its worth every penny if you use it for what its made for
