Maybe we need to ask What a sermon is.
You call it one thing. I call it many different things. Perhaps you call it a sermon because it cuts you to the center and offends you.
To me a sermon can be teaching good or bad and can be seen, or heard from any source you can imagine, not just over a pulpit or from a "religious person".
People who say music doesn't affect the way they think, speak or act are lying to themselves or being lied to because it most certainly does affect the way you are over time. I know. When I listened to depressing and violent music that is who I started to become. When listened to uplifting, positive music that is who I started to become.
The same with the people you are around, the jokes you hear, the books you read, the television you watch, and so on...
sermons are being preached to you everyday and they aren't of a religious nature all the time.
You probably think I am preaching a sermon to you right now; well, I am.
Ha ha!
Lighten up! And find the abundant life, the one that brings lasting joy.
Oh, and be careful who or what you pay attention to because you are what you eat.

Because when the question is most probably not a simple question. Few are, when relating to something as big as religious belief. And besides, this is a public forum with so many types of people who each have a very different view and way of thinking, that when someone asks a religiously themed question they should expect at least some long answers. If someone feels strongly about something, no matter what it is, they should be allowed to express that.

If some one believes that the dinosaurs are an invention of the devil to trick us into accepting science over "god", then the least of my worries is that their long winded :-)
One time during an English exam I realised I had absolutely no idea what the subject matter was, so I just waffled nonsense for three or four pages... could be a coincidence...

Some Christians feel if they give enough scripture, that will prove anything.
They haven't made the mental connection that an argument needs a defining statement, support for the statement, and a logical conclusion.
I think it's like a skunk defense. :)
They can't answer a question, so they spray gobs of toxic scripture at people to ward any argument or description.

Because rather then use their brain and logic to answer something, they have to fall back on Bible quotes cause they can't think for themselves. However, if they could think for themselves, then they'd realize that evolution and the like is an actual valid viewpoint, and their religious view is utter ****.

Some answers aren't that simple! You ask a complicated question, you get a lengthy answer.

I think they just really get into it. Maybe to someone who can sit all day on Sunday being preached at, it doesn't seem too long.

Because unlike atheists and septics they can't force people to listen to what they say and then grade them for whether they be live them A's or think for themselves E's.

If you ask a question, don't you want as much information you can get with the answer?
