The best man is the groom's best man.
Today, we use the best man as a witness to the wedding and the man to stand up and support the groom.
FYI: A LONG time ago, the best man was used for almost the same reason, but since most/every marriage was arranged, the best man was the one that made sure the bride married the groom, since often times the bride didn't want to. So he made sure the wedding took place - helping the groom! Kind of barbaric to us women now!

The "best man" is the *groom's* best man. Just like the maid or matron of honor is the *bride's* maid or matron of honor. If we counted the bride and groom, then of course the bride would be the maid of honor, right? It's because these people are chosen by the bride and groom as their closest buddies besides each other.

this is so since the groom is already a "class" in itself, and the title best man simply indicates that a certain guy is the right-hand man of the groom.
