I served as an ambulance driver during post war Korea, in southeast asia. I was in the USMC and our medical teams were all navy. The one thing we rarely had was a lot of free time, it seemed like we were always on the go. Booze on base was verbotten, so you can chaulk off that part of the script. The humor was pretty limited as well oh, occasionally there would be some humor, especially when the troops got paid and ventured into the village for a night of libation and lovin.

Fights were frequent the longer the liquor flowed, especially when a compeition started over a popular female.

I was always on duty the night of payday and the boys had liberty. It was always a busy night. Kind of like nights in the big city when there is a full moon. It didn't take long before the guys got squirrely, and the more they drank, the worse it got.

Many a trip out to the local village was required on those nights. We took along straps for the guys who were pretty well banged up but still had some fight in em. The straps were to tie them the stretchers when we took them to get sutured , or ex-rayed or blood transfusion, or some sort of pain killer.

I can remember the young lad who was about three sheets to the wind, coming up to me, and in know particular urgency he asked; "hey, da ya think youse guys can do anything with this?"
With that, he opened the palm of his right hand, and there in his hand, was the baby finger of his left hand, severed above the 2nd knuckle. He then said: " if you can't do anything, could you give me a jar of formalehyde, I'd like to keep it." We obliged him with the formaldehyde, since the finger was beyond repair. HE explained to us that he fell down a flight of stairs with a beer bottle in his hand. Oops!

Some felt the banter between the soldiers and the sexual hijinks were done for ratings and was not honestly reflective as to how tired and drained one was, but the operating room sequences were authentic for them.

I never talked with a veteran about his war experiences. Those that were there, don't.
