I have had many canaries over my lifetime. What I would do is buy a nature CD and leave it in the CD player while I was out. The canary tries to mimic the notes and harmony, thus teaching it to sing. Just give your canary time and his singing will become better with age and practise. Also, singing outloud with your canary in the room helps alot too.

You have my favorite pet!
Teaching it to sing is tricky.
I have nine birds, some I've raised myself.
The oldest stopped singing ever since his wife caught a cold and died. He's perfectly healthy, just doesn't care to sing.
Keep other singers nearby but not within sight.
Generally one sings after another.
You need good lighting, so be careful where you place the cage.
Try different places until you get it right.
Diet also important. Lots of greens. An slice of apple once and awhile.
I just mated an American singer to a red chopper and have this beautiful young bird that could be a male. It's taking some time for his feathers to come in, but he's looking more and more colorful each day.
Can't wait to hear his song. Will take a few more months.
Try my suggestions. Feed moderately, fresh water every day. Keep a clean bath in the cage for a morning bath, then take it out.

It normally will only sing if it is a male canary, they love the sunshine,I used to breed them, that is what I always found. Also in the breeding season they love to sing to their mate. Put it by the window, but when it is cooler.

sing to it, and just maybe it will sing back. If that doesn't work, I would purchase a book on singing canaries

Put his cage in or very near a window at sunrise. he will hear the birds outside and sing, i promise.
the sound of running water will also encourage him to sing
