All if the above answers are wrong. E-8, E-4, E-anything is NOT a rank. It is a pay grade. My rank is Staff Sergeant. My pay grade is E-6. There can be several different ranks all in the same pay grade, E-8 is one of those pay grades. In the Army, both Master Sergeants and First Sergeants are E-8s. Check out the attached link.

It is a pay grade (which is associated with a rank) in the US Military. The rank with which is is associated depends on the branch of the military.
Navy/Coast Guard E-8: Senior Chief Petty Officer
Marines/Army/Air Force E-8: Master Seargent or First Seargent

Besides being the enlisted (E) 8th level pay grade, in the AF it's Senior MSgt. Has absolutely nothing to do with the job placement of First Sergeant, which is an organizational, administrative postition in the Air Force, NOT a rank title.

DEPENDS ON WHAT BRANCH OF THE MILITARY YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. IN THE MARINE CORPS AND ARMY AN E-8 IS EITHER GOING TO BE A FIRST SEARGENT OR A MASTER SEARGENT. THEY ARE THE SAME RANK OR PAY GRADE. THEY JUST HOLD A DIFFERENT BILLET.

E stands for enlisted. the number represents your rank. I'm not sure what the specific name for each number is, but I think 8 is the highest it goes (maybe master sargent)
