OK I am going to answer this like you are honest and mean it
When you enter the army you are an e-1. Then a privet first class is an e-2. E-3 is a step above, and an e-4 would have been a corporal in WW II
I was an e-6 Staff sergeant

Thats the paygrade. E-1 is the lowest, then 2.. then 3... then 4... Check it out at...
http://www.military.com/Resources/ResourcesContent/0,13964,78410,00.html.
By the way guys... you can have different ranking people that are both E-4's. This can happen through disciplinary action or necessity for that batallion/battery or whatever. E-4 in army does not nes. mean specialist. Esp. if disciplinary action has been taken temporaly to affect pay.

E means enlisted (as opposed to an officer). 4 is a grade or rank. I believe in the Air Force, for example, that would be a senior airman, 3 stripes.

It depends on what branch of the military you're talking about. An E4 could be a petty officer in the navy, but it's a Corporal in the Marine Corps.

In the Army it can indicate the pay grade for either a Specialist or Corporal. Other branches may have different titles for this pay grade.
