My oldest was the same way and I asked him what the problem was and he said that other peoples butts had been there. So I got him some of those disposable toilet seat covers and told them they were just his. He was happy as a clam. He is now all grown up and just returned from a tour of duty in Iraq one of the first things I sent him in a care package was disposable toilet seat covers he loved them. I guess it is just a germ thing with some people. Hope this helps. Good luck in your adventure of raising boys.

Ask him why he just hovers over it. If he is afraid of falling into the toilet into the poo then get him of of those seats that you usually use for potty training that is a bit smaller than most seats so you can not fall in.If he gets to embarrassed to tell you then comfort him allot. He will soon warm up to you then tell you. personally sometimes I do that (only a little though) when im flushing the toilet cause who wants to get there but all wet when trying to use the bathroom. =) good luck.

this sounds like your poor dear boy was once very constipated. the fear of the pain recurring causes lots of kids to withhold the feces. this causes a tremendous back up and eventually the child's feces trickles around this blockage of feces as liquid, causing a mess. the reason it leaks out is the extreme distension of the bowel causes the bowels nerve cells to stop sending messages about the passing of feces to the brain. the child literally finds out when it's coming out.

some doctors/teachers used to think this behavior is a psychological problem, but in fact, the psych problems came from parents and others berating the child and from the embarassment of a problem involving feces.

what doctors do is treat the constipation and then you help the child retrain the bowel. i read about it and did not see a pediatrician. i used a gentle child's laxative, encouraged lots of water, and had our child sit upon the toilet every day at the same time whether he had to go or not. it took only a couple of weeks to resolve.

With my kids (I have seven) I have always made potty time, a time of reading. There are books (for boys and girls) that talk about sitting and waiting and waiting and sitting, all for the sake of their new creation plopping out of their lilttle bodies, into their little potty chair. I approached the entire concept with the same approach as the bubbles they can blow with their spit. Isn't that nasty? YES! Too us, but not to them...its simply something THEY made! My seventh child was actually quite upset the first time she "produced" and we flushed! It was like taking a creation of hers and putting down the toilet. Oddly enough, wishing it well as it was swolled down the tunnel of the mysterious waters made my 2 year old feel much better! I know this is odd advice, but its exactly what worked for me!

Have you tried simply telling him how it is supposed to be done?

If he is 8, I am sure he is intelligent enough to understand.

Does he not touch the seat due to a fear of germs? You may have a different issue than you thought, if so.

My son also did not like to sit. I gave him a footstool to put his feet on when he was sitting, and that kept his knnes up, which helps the process along and it also kept his feet from dangling which can be very uncomfortable.
