why don't you try an obedience class, or a puppy class. this will teach him basic commands as well as proper dog socialization.
both of the breeds in your pup NEED a strong leader...if he is not being lead..HE WILL LEAD and you might not like that.
he will need strong training as he reaches puberty (around age 2) and the obedience training will be VERY helpful in handling him at that time.
if you have a Petco or Petsmart in your area they offer pet classes. or you could contact your local SPCA or Humane Society and see if they have any programs or suggestions about training.
I'm sure if you went to any book store they would have some discounted books on training...but a class environment would be ideal.

Bravo for wanting to train your dog early and prevent all those problems could crop up. Libraries have lots of books for free. Don't skimp on the cost of training! It will save you a bundle of money in the long run.
Go to an obedience class or read some great books on training. (Try not to pick books randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also!) These are some of my favorites and you can get them on Amazon.com

The best thing to do is take your dog to obedeince classes.
You need a professional to help you handle your dog and the socialization that your dog needs to be comfortable in all environments.
Also a training class will help your dog learn to behave in public places and under distractions.
Look on the internet and yellow pages for a trainer in your area, once you have located one, go and watch thier classes before you sign up to ensure that you are comfortable with thier methods.
Look for a trainer that teaches positive reinforcement, but not exclusively. After the initial learning period there needs to be reasonable and humane correction.
I would watch a more experienced class to see if poeple are satisfied and coming back, and what the results are for the trainer.
Also, every dog is trained differently. Watch out for a trainer that is not experienced enough to differentiate between the different needs of dogs. I would stay away from a trainer that uses 100% of one training collar or 100% of one type of reward.
Your dog has not yet entered thier "teenage" years, some of thier problem behaviors have not yet even started. You will wonder if your dog has "gone deaf' within the next couple months.
Good for you for deciding to train your dog now, while he is "small"

You have chosen a large assertive aggressive bred of dog and you are going to need to do lots of training. If you are going to want to take this dog out in the future you should get him into a training class now while you can easily control him. If you can not afford to go to a class work with him alone the best you can.
A class would be better as it will help with the socialization and teach your dog to look to you for guidence even if lots ofthings are going on around him.
Get into a class whelie he is young and it will make things easier for you when he startes to reach maturity. They tend to loose everything they have learned when they go thru the "teenage" time. So parctice and keep working with you pet.

There are numerous books out there you can buy. Actually I think they make one ecspecially for pitts because they can pretty 'tough-headed'. I own a Pitt. I took her to obedience and we went to state fair and won in the top 10. Being it is a Pitt they can be a little stubborn, just stick with it and he/she will get the hang of it.

Do a trainer search on www.apdt.com for a trainer in your area. Remember, behavior that is rewarded happens more often, so reward the things you like.
I know both pits and rotties that compete in Obedience and Agility. good luck.

The first two links is all you need to clicker train, a positive style of training that I use and love, The third link is all you need to learn to train using corrections. A negative style of training that I don't think works as well. They are both excellent sites. What you decide to use really depends on your personality and patience. http://www.clickersolutions.com/articles/
