The owner's manual recommends it, and I certainly don't want to hurt the car, but is it ok?

NO ONE KNOW THE ENGINE BETTER THAN VW. THEY DON'T RECOMMEND OCTANE LIGHTLY. USING A LOWER OCTANE THAN RECOMMENDED CAN CAUSE KNOCKING.
YOU PAID A LOT FOR YOUR TOUAREG AND I'M SURE YOU WANT TO TAKE GOOD CARE OF IT.
I HAVE A BEETLE GLX (TURBO) WHICH REQUIRES PREMIUM. GOING ON SIX YEARS THE ENGINE RUNS FINE...I WISH THE REST OF THE CAR WAS AS TROUBLE FREE...THE SQUEAKS AND RATTLES DRIVE ME CRAZY!

I drive a 99 Jetta which recommends premium. I always use premium. Every time I take it to the dealer, the mechanic comments on how they can tell that I do not downgrade my gas. It keeps the engine cleaner they say.

read the owners man.
it will tell you the specific fuel requirements by an octane rating
then insure that the octane of the fuel you put in the vehicle meets or exceeds the requirement.

Its okay as the premium is just a recommendation. If it would harm your car, they would have to warn you.
