no matter which side of the immigration debate you are on the only solution to the problem is to document all illegal immigrants so they can pay taxes...with the war in iraq costing 300+billion so far and deficits as far as the eye can see and social security in trouble one day we will be damn glad they are here....if you agree you can collect your ss check.....if you disagree i hope you made good investments with your minimum wage job.

I agree with you. The illegals which are here do have taxes deducted from their checks. They cannot file for a return nor receive an income tax refund because unfortunately they are using a SSN which is not theirs. The illegal immigrants would support being able to have their own number. They do not want to use a false SSN, they just don't have a choice if they are illegal and wish to work.

Disagree. Even looking at the Social Security/retirement issue in isolation, if they are citizens they can bring in indigent parents who can get medicaid which retirees need and further reduce services. In addition, a reason (I think) the government hasn't cracked down on illegals is that some percentage of them do pay in SS money currently. When viewed as an off set to the much larger amount spent on them for services such as education and health care, and given that the feds are responsible for SS and education and health care are local issues, the feds thought that was a good deal. That is only even an off set if they don't claim against it, however. Otherwise they are a bigger group that will retire during the baby boomer retirement, and being closer to being indigent, will get priorities over the rest of us who HAVE tried to think about retirement but couldn't make up the investment still being taken out for the SS benefits we may never see.

There is no way I agree on the Social Security issue, particularly since paying in on SS on someone else's number and using that number is itself a crime and causes major damage to real people.

I would go for screened legalization only of those actually present if somehow the rest of the problem were really solved with fences and border security and dismantling of benefits and employment magnets AND the ability for citizen suits to compell the government to enforce if it chooses not to, again.

However, the economic argument goes only the other way. I think you are mistaking immigration overall, which is slanted towards skilled and educated workers with resources, with illegal immigration which is vastly slanted towards uneducated and poor people who, even if they pay all taxes, are heavily subsidized. That is the reason we like all countries limit immigration of poor people to begin with.

We can get whatever kind of immigrants we want. If we want to compensate for population decline, we could easily do it with skilled workers, who are an economic net benefit, rather than an economic net drain.

The point is that going forward we need to have a limited immigration policy that serves the needs of THIS country, not the needs of foreigners who would like 'free' (to them) education etc.

I don't agree. The reason illegal immigration is tolerated is because it gives the US a low-cost labor base to pick lettuce, raise children, etc. If illegal immigrants pay taxes, that means Americans will also have to pay them minimum wage, because they'll be in the system.

Then Americans will have to pay more for lettuce, which they won't tolerate. So they'll just find someone else to employ at sub-human wages, and the problem will start again.

I am learning that the illegals actually do pay taxes, they just cannot file to get refunds!

It isn't as if the money is n't being 'taken out' of the paychecks of illegals!

It is that the medical services, public schools, and social services, are all going broke at the state level, while the Federal venue to collect taxes, Social Security, are raking it in, BIG TIME, and it will never be doled out, to the wage earners,(illegals!), nor to the social services, nor, to the states!

It PAYS for the federal government to do nothing about illegal workers!

the problem with that is that most illegals work off the books in the underground economy. That would not change if they were suddenly allowed to stay. The only way that would make any sense is to have a national sales tax, effectively eliminating the underground economy, as well as taxing money made from drugs etc. If you spend, you pay taxes.

Why do you think that is the only solution? How many are paid under the table by businesses that avoid paying social security taxes for them by doing so?

The "only" solution that I see is penalizing the businesses that hire illegal immigrants. They are here for jobs; take out those jobs and they leave.

Disagree someone is right it solves nothing. We need to stop the money drains that we can. We can't stop the drains in security-it won't happen. But we can stop the drains elsewhere. And yes-look on the web-this mass of people is a drain-even if most paid taxes-it wouldn't cover. We can't take care of the world as nice as that sounds. We need to take care of the citizens here.
